Ultimate Hikes met and surpassed all our expectations before, during and after our 5-day Milford Trek. Everything about their operation was efficient and professional, friendly and helpful. The quality of their service, food, lodgings, equipment etc was outstanding.

My sister and I travelled to Queenstown to do the Milford Trek with Ultimate Hikes and we had a trouble-free trip with a mixed-nationality group of 29 hikers, with four guides. The first day involved a bus trip to Te Anau Downs, boat trip to Glade Point, then short hike to Glade Hut for our first night. Day 2 was a mid-length hike, some uphill, but mostly on good tracks; Day 3 was the challenging climb to the top of McKinnon Pass and down; Day 4 was a long, mostly down-hill walk with some rocky areas and some good level track, with a boat ride at the end to Milford Sound. Day 5 was a cruise (no hiking) on Milford Sound, and bus ride back to Queenstown.

We had a twin-share, ensuite room at all of the huts and found the accommodations to all be of the same high standard. The rooms were all clean and comfortable, with hot showers, comfortable beds and fantastic views. The huts all had a very effective drying room for those occasions when you arrived with water pouring out of your boots, and made it easy to hand-wash basic clothing and have things dry in a few hours.

We were greeted with afternoon tea at each hut (home-cooked savoury scones, peach and white-chocolate muffins, etc), and had a chance to shower, relax and take care of washing before the evening meal. The meals at each hut were of restaurant quality, and a good variety of wines were available for purchase. In the mornings, cooked breakfasts were available, along with cereals and good, brewed coffee.

The guides were very professional, pleasant and caring, and provided excellent information about the track, wildlife, plant life, history etc. They offered "foot care" and tended to any injuries or illnesses, and always monitored the progress of all members of the party during the hikes.

Highly recommended, and good value.

My husband and I walked the Milford Track in late December. It had been on our "bucket list" for a long time and, since we are in our 60s, we decided we had better do it now. We spent several months prior to our trip walking, including some hills, and making sure our hiking boots were well broken in. (Be sure to take hiking poles. ) We found the hike strenuous at times but very doable, and a fantastic experience!

Ultimate Hikes did not leave anything to chance. Everything was well organized and executed. Our guides, Katie, Kelly, Midori, and Moon, were all delightful, entertaining, and professional. We opted for the private room with en suite. Our room in each lodge was very comfortable with lovely views. The food was very good and plentiful and the evening programs were fun and educational. Our guides encouraged us when we needed it and seemed to take an interest in each hiker. We had the maximum in our group (50 hikers) but we never felt that our group was too big. Within a few minutes of starting our walk each morning we were all spread out and enjoying the amazing scenery on our own, encouraged to linger whenever we wanted to. The area is so pristine that we could drink water from the streams and waterfalls. We had clear and sunny days throughout our hike. The scenery was spectacular!

Everything about Ultimate Hikes was first class. We would highly recommend this experience!

Do wear good gear and bring along your waterproof jacket. Although Ultimate hikes can provide one they are one size fits all and not as waterproof as the best gortex jackets are. Do wear in your shoes before the walk, do bring a pair of proper thick hiking socks (good ones available at Ultimate), and buy the foot fleece also at Ultimate- it really works to prevent blisters and helps with foot pain such as metatarsalgia. Dont bring any extra hiking clothes, other than that advised by Ultimate, as the driers at the lodges are fantastic (wish they had the same at ski resorts). Walking paths are well maintained, though bring at least one walking pole to help with the uneven bits.
Dont worry if your friends wont join you to do the walk you will meet plenty of like minded fun people. Theres never a dull moment and the views are spectacular. Cant wait to do another walk with Ultimate.

We could not have asked for a more perfect hiking experience!

Cons: Kind of expensive (but even here, the money seems well worth it for the experience you get) I also felt very uncomfortable when our guides had to serve us food. It felt like I was being waited on by my friends! I would have much preferred to have them eat WITH us so we could enjoy their company.

Pros: BEST GUIDES EVER! Fantastic food, tea, coffee, snacks all the time, you never go hungry. Staff at the lodges are great. Lodges are clean. They do well to prepare you for the hike, providing you with a backpack and raincoat if you don't have one. Beautiful boat rides to and from the start and end of the hike.

If you plan on wearing hiking boots, BREAK THEM IN BEFORE THE HIKE!! There were a lot of people who suffered serious blisters/injuries because they didn't do this.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! We started the hike as strangers and left feeling like a family!
