“Helpful hosts, walk to town”
Reviewed April 22, 2011

We selected this property as they offered two bedroom units (ideal for our party of four couples) and storage of our luggage whilst we did the Milford Track Walk. The units are roomy, well presented, with plenty of cooking facilities, but suffer from only one smallish combined bathroom / toilet, which is a bit awkward and slow for two couples sharing. Our hosts, Jo and Doug, were very helpful with advice on additional tours, attractions and restaurants, including the Earnslaw Steamer cruise, the Gondala ride to the Luge, and the Britannia Restaurant in the Mall downtown.

Room Tip: The walk back from town is steep - good training

Excellent accommodation within easy walking distance from town. Really enjoyed our stay here with so much to see and do. At our request the motel managed extend our stay for another day with no problem.

Stayed 3 nights in a one bed-roomed unit. Could not get a upstairs room ,wished we had asked when booking as the downstairs ones are a little dark. This was not our first choice as it was busy when we visited.

Living room spacious with a flat screen TV, sofa and dining table and 4 chairs. I would not call it modern though. Table and chairs were the type cica 1980's. I looked in a few units and all the furnishings (except the said retro tables) were different, nothing matched. The bedding in each unit was also different. Bit of a hotchpotch really.

The kitchen area had 2 rings with toaster, microwave and fridge. Utensils were ok etc but both the pans and cutlery were cheap and nasty and really difficult to cook with. Crockery ok though.

Bathroom a fair size, shower over the bath (pressure ok) plenty of space to put all your 'suff'. However I do not like to be informed by a notice on the wall to limit my shower to 5 mins, due to high consumption of electricity. At $161NZ per night, I shall shower as long as I like. Housekeeping fine...

There is a large patio door to the front of the unit which did not have any voile curtains so as people could see in when passing perhaps these would be a good idea. Had to keep the curtain closed til we got dressed of a morning,.

Bedroom with one double and a single bed, comfort ok nothing special but again no net at the windows so had to keep the curtains closed when getting ready. And from a safety point of view we kept the curtains closed during the day. Wardrobe with plenty space and iron and board.

Charge for the Internet and it was a tad slow. Also laundry facilities (fee) but with the choice to hang clothes outside and not just use the dryer.

As mentioned before there is a steep hill up from town, but worth it to be a little out of the way. Were we to go back it would not be my first choice.

Stayed for four nights on a visit to Queenstown. The motel is in a quiet residential location above the busyness of the town, but still only a short walk away to almost everything. It is true that the return trip has a steep road to walk up, but this was really not a big deal. The facilities were well-equipped, clean and spacious. The apartments each have large a sliding glass door and small sitting area outside that provides a good view of the hills above the town and the gondola. Internet service was expensive and slow. No smoking is allowed in the units, but some guests did smoke just outside and unfortunately the odor wafted into our unit when the doors were open. Doug was very helpful with advice. Overall, this was a good value, especially compared with other alternatives in Queenstown.

The staff at the hotel were very accomodating. Rooms are modern and clean. Location is a few blocks from town and not good walking distance. Much better hotel/motel choices for views.

This is an excellent motel. We had alarge, well equipped suite, which was designed with self-catering in mind. The motel is located just outside the centre of town, which made it very quiet, but at the same time, close enough to allow us to walk into town in about 10 minutes. The reception was extremely helpful, suggesting sightseeing, activities and places to eat, all of which we found to be as described. Overall a highly recommended motel. Internet was not free, but was quite inexpensive.

After spending a month on both Northand South Islands of New Zealandand visiting at some 20 different motels it is our considered opinion that 'Amity Lodge Motel' exceeded all others in every respect mentionable from outright friendliness of Doug and his staff , to spaciousnessand appointments of rooms, to the quality of the cleanliness , to the proximity of the downtown and attractions, to personal hepfulness in all respects. With all this quality it seems absurd, perhaps picayune to even mention price as the accomodation is priceless. Nevertheless with payment in Canadian dollars it was the the most for the least in any country we have visited and this includes our own!!!!! It is so good in fact we made it a point to retuen to Queenstown after another two weeks travel and had reserved a room with the expectation we would be leaving new zealand with the best posible memories. All this and a complimentary coupon for a glass of wine at the Britannia Restaurant in the downtown core with the best roast lamb dinner ever experienced.coupled with meeting up with fellow Canadians from Brithish Colunbia for a happy exchange..Go there, enjoy a marvellous experience, enjoy, tell them we helped you to make your decision an easy one. Hope you read this Doug and thanks..
