“Great cost effective coach trip”
Reviewed December 26, 2012

When we were looking at visiting Milford Sound from Queenstown, we wanted to do it without having to break the bank. A colleague of mine recommended this one to me as they had done it previously and had enjoyed it.

The coach trip leaves from a handy location in the centre of town at a little after 7 in the morning. What would have been helpful however is if the website would state that it would make stops at cafe's along the way as I found myself the night before desperately trying to sort my lunch for the day, as lunch is not included in the price of this trip. No biggie though.

The guide that we had was very friendly and chatty, and provided a lot of useful commentary along the way. It was very apparent he is proud of, and knowledgable about this area. After a two hour drive, the bus makes the first stop in Te Anau for a half hour morning tea break. Be mindful here that the bathrooms are not overly large and as several tour buses arrived at the same time, the queues for the cafe were rather long. Fortunately, as previously mentioned, I had purchased my lunch the night before and was able to avoid not only this, but the expensive food. Continuing on, the coach makes several stops, perfect for photograph opportunities before continuing on to Milford Sound and arriving at around 1:30 before the cruise on the catmaran.

The catamaran is a fairly large vessel with plenty of room to get around both on the open space top level for the perfect views of the cascades and falls, as well as underneath where you are able to purchase food. As a side note, you will find the prices for food onboard are very expensive, so with a little forward planning, you too can avoid these costs. The cruise around the sounds was a little under two hours and well worth the experience. This day was under a cloudless summer sky, but I would still recommend taking a windbreaker as the wind still had a fair bite to it. The Captain would intermittently provide information about the sounds via the speaker system, which is also translated into another language of which I'm not sure. We were fortunate to be taken right next to an outcrop of rocks that was host to a large number of fur seals basking in the sun. I did not see any dolphins, however several on the coach stated that they had.

Returning to the coach, we departed at around 3:30pm with only a 20 minute stop in Te Anau again, arriving in Queenstown a little before 8:00pm. This tour cost $115.00 (+booking fee) per person, making it one of the more affordable coach trips to Milford Sound. Our coach did not look like the most amazing of all that we saw, however it was comfortable, had a great driver and delivered a superb day. I wouldn't just recommend this to people trying to get to the sounds on a budget, I would say that anyone wanting to get there should consider this company as you might just be presently surprised.
