“Don't go past this one”
Reviewed January 18, 2011

This is the only place to stay in Milford Sound other than back packers. Milford Lodge is also a back packers, so don't make the mistake of booking a back packers room as it is a dorm and of a much lower standard.

For those wishing hotel style accomodation there are 4 chalets and they are top class. We didn't expect such a high standard in a remote location. The back packers is not at the same class, so get in early if you wish to stay in one of the chalets. They are fully self contained with all mod cons and offer a great view over the river which runs runs past the back of the chalet. Hugh glass windows offer superb views and a wood deck is also there with a BBQ.

Milford is remote with little facilities, although a pub does offer basic meals which are more than adequate if you do not wish to cook yourself. If you do your own cooking, you should bring everything with you in the food line. The chalets do have all the necessary cooking utensils.

Be careful if you use Milford Lodge to book your cruise. They offer a discount for guests. However it is on the smallest operator with the smallest boat, nothing wrong with that, just letting you know. Real Journeys is the biggest operator with the largest boats.

Milford Sound ia a superb place to visit, Milford Lodge Chalets are the only place to stay.

This was an excellent faciliity. We booked a dorm room for 5 so that our family could be together and not share with strangers. Kids were charged at half rate so it was quite reasonable prices. Room was clean and beds were comfy. Bathroom facilities were also spotless, kitchen was large with all facilities, fridges, lots of cookers, dining room was roomy and there was also a large lounge room with loads of sofas.

Kids borrowed numerous board games (plenty to choose from) while we cooked dinner.

Only bad thing was the sandflies! They were everywhere and we struggled to keep them out of our room. I recommend bringing some insect spray to spray in your room. I certainly wouldn't recommend camping here as the sandflies would just be too much. Inside a room was fine though.

The Milford Sound cabins offer a good price-performance ratio, located in a lovely scenery in walking distance to Milford Sound. Don't expect great luxury, but this is not what you can expect for the price. Be prepared for the sandflies!!! .

I booked way in advance so I could get the four riverside chalets for 2 nights for our group of 8 friends travelling together. We were all knocked over by the quality of the rooms and the beautiful views from each chalet. Milford Sound managed to produce beautiful weather for our stay as well, with blue skies and sunshine, so we were able to see the tops of the surrounding mountain peaks from the chalets.

Each chalet was big enough to hold all 8 of us for breakfast or lunch - unfortunately it was not possible to just open up the doors and spill out onto the deck as the sandflies are a bit of a problem, but there was plenty of room inside, and with the curtains pulled back it was as good as being outside. The facilities in the chalets were top notch, including a coffee plunger with ground coffee provided.

We had dinner each night at the Blue Duck Cafe which we all loved - huge meals, good simple food, great atmosphere, and a pool room!

All in all, I would recommend staying in the chalets for a visit to Milford Sound as you really get the feel of the place. Also, as we arrived in the early evening and left early in the morning, we didn't encounter any traffic on the road between Te Anau and Milford.

We stayed in one of the riverside chalets at $250 a night. Lovely outlook right next to the river. We had dinner at the only bar & restaurant in Milford "Blue Duck" ,food is average. Can buy a bottle of wine from either Blue Duck or the Milford Lodge both are the same price. Can get a shuttle from the lodge to blue duck, complimentary every hour or a 15 min walk. We had breakfast at the lodge $9.00 for a bagel with cream chesse and tomato. We did the kayaking with Roscoes Kayaking the Stirling Cruise at 9am for five hours $175 each they take you out in a taxi boat to Stirling Falls then kayak back with the seals swimming around the kayaks for a couple of hours ! Priceless ! Got very close to the Falls..Now the downfall of staying at Milford Lodge is our room was not serviced ..we stayed for a couple of nights ...at $250 a night you expect the room to be serviced we queried so with the staff and was told it should have been done ...not good.

The chalets are very nice and the outlook is astonishing. They are well equipped and comfortable although the cleaners need to get a better hoover. The major downside to this area is the sandflies and one would have expected slightly more technology to help one avoid them. This site caters for the whole range of travellers from backpackers to people renting these expensive chalets so you have to allow for that. The eating options are very limited but when you walk down to the Sound and see dolphins playing in the bay against that backdrop you will make allowances!!

The chalets are gorgeous, well situated, modern and comfortable. My husband and I were originally booked into a backpacker room but once we arrived were quite disappointed by the room which smelt of old cologne and was very dark. We peeked into an empty chalet and it looked great so decided to 'upgrade' for a considerable amount more but it was SO worth it!
The difference between the two rooms was unbelievable. The chalets are roomy, and modern with gorgeous views of the mountains and lake around you. We cooked our dinner in the shared kitchen and ate in the chalet watching the sunset over snowcapped mountains.
I was enjoyed a relaxing bath while my husband watched tv and relaxed. We also went down the glowworm trail which was fun.
Visiting Milford Sound is a MUST do for the South Island, it is stunning and staying in the chalet at Milford Lodge made it even more special
