We stayed in a camper here one night and thought it was great. Really large bathrooms and they made a killer soup:).
There's only 2 places to stay on Milford and only one if you have a camper so I found it a little amusing when they asked how we heard about the place. Internet. Is via satellite so very slow but we didn't come on holiday to spend time on the computer so it didn't bother me. Well worth the trip.

I stayed at Milford Sound Lodge only one night. The lodge is located very close to a river and is surrounded by those amazing and tall mountains. Also people could walk from there to the very end to attend a cruise, the small airport (helicopter flights) and to the bus port. When I arrived I had no idea where to wait for the pick-up shuttle between all the tour buses. Unfortunately the shuttle wasn't in time and I had no clue where the lodge would be as I haven't seen it on the way. So I waited for 30 mins which I found a little poor from the organisation, as it is just a stone throw by car and the driver really can do it in time if he wanted to. I stayed in a 5 bed dorm which was alright but very basic and small. - I didn't like when roommates don't bother in locking the...To come back to the locker I locked my baggage into the store room and when I returned the door was unlocked. I know it's my responsibility but I think if such room exists at least everybody should care for the others as well and respect their belongings. Maybe the locker can be swapped into a different locker, so when the door is shut the door can be opened only with help of a key as I believe some people really don't understand those door lockers (I've seen that quite often). Anyway, The showers were roomy and the toilets alright but somehow the air doesn't circulates quite ok, so it can be really smelly from time to time. There are two doors to get into the huge bathroom but only one hand dryer at one door. Some people looking desperately for a towel or other hand drying opportunity when they wanna go out the other door (maybe it won't hurt to install one at the other door as well). I was told to bring food because I phoned them to do a booking as there is no supermarket. However when I got there I met people who weren't aware of that because they couldn't get the information out from the website... But there is a very small in house store if you need to buy food or just buy something from the restaurant at the Milford Sound Lodge which can be quite cost-effectively. The kitchen is huge but the power oven not really hot, it takes ages to cook on them, so the gas stoves were the better option. At the day I left, I took the shuttle again and I really had to make that bloke move to drop me to the bus! The lodge needs to improve their service especially be more confident with the walks around Milford Sound (condition, lengths, where they start and finish etc.), it’s not good enough to just point out for the map and to tell me that there is no short walk around whereas there are at least 2 or 3 really easy and short walks (possible to do with kids too). The lounge is great, a good place to chill out on couches or give it a buzz and play a piano. If you want to use the internet, you will need to pay for it. There is no mobile phone reception in Milford Sound! During the day it can get a little noise regarding those helicopters and light airplanes which flying in and out there every few minutes.

Happy travels :)

I only stayed a night, and it's true that there are only about two places where you can stay overnight in Milford Sound, not giving you much of a choice, but still, the Lodge is set in a beautiful place, with a stone's throw away from lovely little walks you can take. There isn't much to do if you need to keep yourself entertained, but really, who needs entertainment when your eyes can feast on one of the most beautiful places on earth??
Everything was lovely except one thing for me - the walls are pretty thin, so if your neighbors are talking loudly well into the night, you'll be up with them. That's the only reason I give it 4 stars.
The staff are great, the rooms are comfy and cozy, well kept, and the showers always have hot water to further help you mellow out. There is a laundry room, should you need to get your laundry done, and the kitchen is cleaned twice a day, so it is squeaky clean!
Even though it is not that far from the Visitor's Center, should you need a lift, the Lodge also has a free shuttle service to take you to and pick you up from the Visitor's Center, so there's no need to worry if you are traveling with heavy luggage.
If ever I go back to Milford Sound, I don't think I want to stay anywhere else.

After walking the iconic Milford Track the Milford Sound Lodge is the perfect place to relax and celebrate the achievement. Friendly staff and a good coffee marked a pleasant return to civilisation. Our reasonably priced double room was warm and more than adequate. The bathroom and kitchen facilities are excellent. The lounge and common room areas are comfortable and welcoming. The friendly easy going staff enjoying a quieter spell between busy seasons made the visit especially pleasing.

The only place to stay in Milford Sound. My husband and I stayed in the hostel portion in a private double. The bathrooms are not ensuite but were very close and the walk was covered from the elements. The kitchen was clean and spacious and wine and beer is available for sale. To be frank, the room was perfectly fine and upgrading to the lodge part of the facility is probably not necessary. Better to spend your money on one of the better boat trips which tour the beauty of the Sound. We had a rental car and the drive from Te Anau is well worth hours with multiple stops. The tunnel is a little scary and anyone who drives the route must award tremendous respect to the men who built this road.

Only stayed here one night but it truly was the highlight of our trip to New Zealand. The riverside chalets are beautiful with a most comfortable bed. Kitchen well equipped, chalet beautifully furnished. As kitchen had no hob (but everything else) I went to main block kitchen to cook my pasta! This made the evening even more enjoyable as you mix in with all the other guests, from around the world, cooking all sorts of different things! It was misty and very atmospheric the evening we arrived but we awoke to beautiful sunshine and the breakfast trip on the boat (part of our package) was brilliant! Visit to the underwater discovery centre was also interesting. It's not cheap but worth every penny and gets booked-up months in advance so book ahead! There were problems with the road (landslips etc.) not long before we arrived so at one stage we thought we might have to cancel. As it turned out, the road was open during the day but closed from 7.00pm until the following morning which made it seem even more of an adventure, seemingly cut off from the world (at least for one night!!) You also get the place to yourself when all the coach tours have gone. Truly the experience of a lifetime.

There is surprisingly a severe lack of accommodation in Milford Sound so this is really THE only place to stay, so book ahead in case they are full as it is a very long drive back to the nearest town Te Anu
It is backpacker accommodation but was filled with a wide variety of people, middle aged couples, families with kids, various types of travellers and backpackers.
While there is a wee cafe serving tea, muffins soups ...etc if you need proper meal we suggest you bring your own food and use the kitchen facilities in the hostel. We picked up a cooked chicken in the supermarket in Te Anu, a bag of washed salad & bread rolls to save the hassle of cooking dinner. There were a lot of people using the kitchen at the same time, as we arrived at peak dinner time.
The room was basic, two comfortable single beds with nice linen/duvet and the room was very warm on a cold Milford Sound night. There was a little chair too.
It is a wooden structure and we did notice talking from the next door room and the next morning people were wheeling their bags along the wooden planked corridor outside when checking out. Really only a slight inconvenience as it only lasted seconds.
The shower/toilet block was surprisingly warm, water pressure was good and there were no queues when we were using them. We rang ahead but there was no ensuite rooms available.
We were in Room 17 which was furthest away from the shower block so probably less noisy.
Next time we will stay in the private riverside chalets at $255 per night ...but they need to be booked many weeks in advance.
