We took the overnight cruise on Milford Sound and it was fantastic. Of course, Milford Sound itself is beyond description; so breathtaking. The cruise allowed us to be crusing in the sound for the entire evening and the next morning. We even got to take their little tender out on the water for some small scale crusing. We had excellent weather which also helped. The crew was altogether very helpful and friendly and knowledgeable. The meals were very nicely done and served (but you're not really there for the food!!). The cabin was very comfortable; to was small as you would expect on a ship.
The driver Barry was Fantastic - Real Journeys, so helpful and informative. He clearly knows his trade and filled the long journey up with interesting information. The day is long if you take the coach both ways so I recommend the scenic flight back. More expensive but well worth it.
This was an incredible journey through Milford... stunning landscape, stunning waterfalls that they get you close into. They laughingly told us that if the waterfall sprays on you... you walk away looking fifteen years younger. The staff aboard are lovely, attentive and passionate about their job. It's an experience you simply must take. Words are not suffice to elaborate on how magnificent Milford truly is.
awe inspiring scenery along this fjord. great guide on ship. waterfalls, seals, penguins, native bush. be prepared--it WILL rain, dress warmly, its windy.
i visited this wonderful natural attraction on new zealands south island in october. the whole boat journey was the best thing out of the whole experience.
This is a long day out as Milford Sound is approx 180 miles by road from Queenstown, so if you do not like sitting in a coach this may not be the excursion for you. Travel time is over 4 hours. There are regular stops on the way to view other things and the loos! So the outward journey is broken down into smaller segments, though the return journey had only one stop. There are great mountain views throughout the journey.
This trip is well worth the cost and Milford Sound does not disappoint, and if you are driving a car around NZ then this is a relaxing day off for the car driver. As a final comment if you have come half way around the world it would be a shame to miss Milford Sound.
