I love the kilns desserts which are half price on sunday and monday. The Creme Brulee is very good. So dessert and coffee is $10.45, great for the budget ( and it means you only have to eat one helping now the whole thing if you made it your self)

I had reasonable expectations of the Kiln as a staple Invercargill pub grub venue. My entree didn't disappoint the Arancini rice balls were to die for. This was in total contrast to the calamari (an entree which I chose as a main). The calamari was rubbery, the coating was floury and soggy and such a disappointment compared to the starter. What a pity. The others in the group also experienced mixed results with ups to the oysters and a steak meal that was overcooked. Consistency in meals would appear to be something to strive for - it was almost as if there was a good and bad chef in the kitchen?
On a positive note the front line staff were great.

Stopped in for a late lunch and the food was fine -- a step up from traditional pub food. Staff was friendly and helped us choose the best food on the menu. They had a full selection of Monteith's beers. My wife liked the Summer Ale (ginger) beer. The hamburger was very good; the hot pot was hearty and meaty. Overall, a relaxing good lunch.

Popular restaurants get busy. Excellent restaurants handle busy. Unfortunately The Kiln just didn't cope with the pressure of a full house tonight. Our 1 plate of breads took 40 minutes to arrive and our mains more than an hour and a half. 3 meals in 4 were great, the 4th pretty average actually. The lengthy delay made for an unwanted late night and the wait staffs offer to ply us with more alcohol on empty stomachs was not helpful. A token discount of approx $18 (2 drinks) from an overall bill of around $240 didn't appease. We're off to Buster Crabb next time.
