My expectations were high and the Victoria Railway Hotel exceeded them. If you are looking for a modern, sterile, box, this is NOT the place you want to stay. This is a place to stay if you want to enjoy a pleasant combination of local history, comfort, and good company. The descriptions of the hotel and other reviews are almost too good to be true, but the quality of the facility and the character of the host and hostess, Peter and Rose, are everything as promised and more. Though we arrived a little later than hoped after the drive from Queenstown, Peter was gracious, and opened up the onsite pub so I could have a pint after a long day's travel. The lack of an elevator was a bit of a surprise, but not a problem - Peter ran up the stairs with the heavy bag without asking (and without apparent effort). The hotel, which is more than a century old, is clean and well maintained. Everything looked fresh, and our modern room decor was a bit of a dichotomy, a contrast from the Victorian era architecture and style. The ensuite room we had was large, warmed for our arrival, the TV was more than adequate in size with good channel selection, the storage space for our clothing was spacious, and the bathroom was huge and modern. We didn't have breakfast there - the hotel is on the west end of the business district, and there a half-dozen interesting bakeries and cafe's within a block or two, and "pastry hunting" is one of our vacation treats. Also, the Speight's ale house is one block away, which was especially handling after the "sampler", which consisted of eight 8 oz. "samples"... We did have dinner at the hotel one evening - my wife had the venison steak and I had the bangers and mash - more food than we would normally eat in two days but it was so good we both finished our meals. I cannot say enough good about the hospitality of Peter and Rose. We spoke with one local who was not aware of the extensive upgrades to the interior of the hotel and called it "that old hotel," but trust only those reviews of those who have stayed there in the past few years. Would stay again and recommend it to highly to all.
