Victoria Railway Hotel

My expectations were high and the Victoria Railway Hotel exceeded them. If you are looking for a modern, sterile, box, this is NOT the place you want to stay. This is a place to stay if you want to enjoy a pleasant combination of local history, comfort, and good company. The descriptions of the hotel and other reviews are almost too good to be true, but the quality of the facility and the character of the host and hostess, Peter and Rose, are everything as promised and more. Though we arrived a little later than hoped after the drive from Queenstown, Peter was gracious, and opened up the onsite pub so I could have a pint after a long day's travel. The lack of an elevator was a bit of a surprise, but not a problem - Peter ran up the stairs with the heavy bag without asking (and without apparent effort). The hotel, which is more than a century old, is clean and well maintained. Everything looked fresh, and our modern room decor was a bit of a dichotomy, a contrast from the Victorian era architecture and style. The ensuite room we had was large, warmed for our arrival, the TV was more than adequate in size with good channel selection, the storage space for our clothing was spacious, and the bathroom was huge and modern. We didn't have breakfast there - the hotel is on the west end of the business district, and there a half-dozen interesting bakeries and cafe's within a block or two, and "pastry hunting" is one of our vacation treats. Also, the Speight's ale house is one block away, which was especially handling after the "sampler", which consisted of eight 8 oz. "samples"... We did have dinner at the hotel one evening - my wife had the venison steak and I had the bangers and mash - more food than we would normally eat in two days but it was so good we both finished our meals. I cannot say enough good about the hospitality of Peter and Rose. We spoke with one local who was not aware of the extensive upgrades to the interior of the hotel and called it "that old hotel," but trust only those reviews of those who have stayed there in the past few years. Would stay again and recommend it to highly to all.

Room Tip: Ask for an ensuite bathroom if it's really important - they have a tub! We peeked into some of...

Lovely old hotel with lots of character and renovated to a very high standard. Just some small attention to details missing like cobwebs from the ceiling and dust on the couch. Light switches had finger smudges. Most disappointing was the spare toilet roll was stored on the toilet brush handle.

Location in excellent. Hosts were great. For $180.00 a night, we would have expected a slightly higher standard of cleanliness in a room.

Room Tip: Room 21 is very well appointed with a modern stylish bathroom however window looks straight out onto...

Amazing historic building that have been renovated very well (especially bathrooms very nice clean new) but was more amazed by the service from rose and peter. As I was away from home for first time and also sick they went out of their way to make sure I was looked after...a lemsip orange lemon honey to take up to my room and helped me organise things daily as well as offered a kind ear to listen to all my woes. Thankyou so much Rose and Peter! I reccommending you to everyone I know!

Old world charm, great location, handy to shopping and restaurants. just a couple of minutes walk to the Invercargill brewing Co. Meals were fabulous (can't beat the snarlers from Tuatapere) and breakfast was like 'home-made'. Cheers Peter and Rose

On the way to the Bluff Oyster Festival (which should be on every one's bucket list) we stayed at the Victoria. The hosts were gracious, helpful, and wonderfully hospitable. The rooms are cozy, old fashioned and delightful and very affordable. The lounge area has an open fire with lovely leather lounges, a bar and an ambiance that is so pleasant and relaxing. The other guests gather there and most of them, on our stay, were interesting and we now have lots of new friends from all sorts of places. We had an accommodation nightmare in Bluff the next night and after phoning the Victoria to see if they could help, Peter, the manager of the Victoria, bent over backwards to help us.
We highly recommend the Victoria Railway Hotel. Good old fashioned country hospitality.

Room Tip: For budget travelers, there are rooms with shared bathrooms.

A character filled hotel - fantastically located, walking distance to shops & restaurants. If you want comfort, location & character ,this is the place to stay. A huge thank you to Pete & Rose who made it extra special.
