Bed and pillows made for an uncomfortable sleep. In room air con didn't work properly. Smokers area next to our window was not good for the smell in our room. Only saving grace for the hotel was the mostly friendly and helpful staff. We chose this place as it was the only accom available during Bluff Oyster Festival.

It is with regret I read that your stay at the Kelvin Hotel was not up to standard. Beds and pillows, uncomfortable? not sure what has happened here, I will check this out. We all deserve a good nights sleep!

I’m not sure if it is typical however when we parked up and had a walk around the centre of Invercargill at around 7.00pm on a Wednesday night it was like a ghost town. We were looking for somewhere to have a meal but where? There had been lots of fastfood type establishments on Tay Street as we drove towards the CBD but no obvious alternatives downtown.

It was only after a few circuits of a few blocks that we came upon Level One Restaurant & Bar at the Kelvin Hotel by chance and ventured upstairs to see what it was like. The bar is quite large and was quiet so we were quickly greeted by one of the staff, presumably glad to see a customer! When we indicated we were looking for a meal we were given the option of the bar or the dining room and decided to have a look at the latter (although the bar lounge looked fine - just a bit lacking atmosphere).

The staff in the smaller scale restaurant were friendly and mannerly and we were introduced to a trainee waitress who was shadowing a more experienced member of staff that evening. My impressions were that the restaurant was a bit dark and old fashioned looking but at least with a few couples in we were pleased not to be dining alone. The menu had a reasonable variety of choices and we opted for Blue Cod in beer batter and a Smoked Chicken Salad.

The cod was served wrapped in greaseproof paper (posh substitute for newspaper!) with some salad and chunky fries and was just what I was looking for on the night. My wife’s salad had decent sized slices of chicken breast, mixed greens, some brie, pine nuts, parsnip “shards” and a mustard herb vinaigrette all of which she thought were very good. We decided to share dessert - Apple & Blueberry Crumble with a topping of almonds and served with vanilla ice cream which was quite tasty.

Our bill including some wine and a tip came to NZ$95 which we didn’t think unreasonable for what we had been served by very pleasant staff.

Thank you for your review on Level One Restaurant. Yes the town was quite with Easter and Anzac weekend a lot of people were taking advantage of the extended break, unfortunately leaving Invercargill (we do get busy!). Very pleased that you found our place to be accommodating and you enjoyed yoursleves. Happy journeys

We had a 2 night stop here. Of all the city hotels we stayed in, this was probably the best.
The reception staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was reasonably equipped and clean, although the decor was a bit dated.
The restaurant was very good - excellent food at a good price, although we were disappointed that my wife's request for them to provide something to celebrate my 60th birthday led to their "gift" of a pack of 6 Cadburys roses.
Although it is located in the city centre, there is not much nearby to do.

A room heater that didn't work, a hair dryer that didn't work and an unasked for wake up call at about 6.30 in the morning - not major problems when taken separately, but put them together and we feel we should drop the rating to 'average'.
That's a bit of a shame because this is a pleasant if slightly old-fashioned hotel. The staff are helpful and they have a good arrangement with the local car park whereby you park for nothing. OK, the cost of parking is doubtless built into the room price, but you feel they are doing the right thing.
We should also mention the restaurant, where we ate on the second night (Sunday, March 2nd to help the hotel) - we had a good meal and we're served by a very affable waiter.
Invercargill isn't the most exciting place in the world, but we would be happy to stay at the Kelvin if we are ever down this way again, despite the 'moans' at the beginning of this review!

Title says everything….this was a one night work-related stay. Staff very friendly and efficient on check-in with valet parking. Rooms maybe getting a bit dated but very clean and comfortable and quiet even though in centre of town. Restaurant was excellent and very friendly.

I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: I had a road-side room but it was very quiet.

Although this hotel is getting old, it is immaculately clean and caters to all needs. The staff are very friendly and the service response time is excellent. In-house dining is good and reasonably priced. Most importantly the bed was very comfortable with multiple pillows of differing firmness allowing for choice. I normally sleep poorly when in hotels but slept very well. I was on the 6th floor that allows some windows to open to able to breathe fresh, clean Southland air rather than suffer air conditioning. Would definitely visit again..

Room Tip: 6th floor has small windows that open - fresh air!
