A smashing small museum with very friendly staff.
Cafe for lunch was also very good.
Henry and Burt are very interesting, amazing really plus the outside gardens are worth a visit, perhaps just to see another view of Henry.

Run of the mill tourists like us don't go to Invercargill . It is way off the radar . We planned to spend a night there , by default , to take the Shark Dive off Bluff early in the morning . Imagine our consternation when told that the dive had been cancelled due to bad weather and we had to stay in Invercargill for a day without any plans .
This eclectic Museum was recommended by the ever reliable Rough Guide so we decided to spend the spare time and discovered this wonderful place .

Not to be missed

1] The Minerva statue in the forecourt .

2] The statue of the living fosssil Tuatara in the foreground along with the LIVING FOSSIL TREE - Ginko biloba - just next to it . Both are from the age of Dinosaurs

3] The amazing display of resident and breeding Tuataras on the ground floor . This is the best place to see one in NZ and there will surely be one or two obliging '' dinos '' out on view .

4] Amazing collection of Maori artefacts and jewellery and how it is made .

5] Giant Pounami greenstone boulder - touch and feel the '' Mana ''

6] Lovely Queens Park with its formal rose garden , tree park , statuary , aviary and mini zoo .

Entry is unrestricted [ donation of '' gold '' coin - 1 or 2 NZD requested ]

Parking is free and spacious .

Highly recommended attraction that took us by surprise on a day of great disappointment .

This is a great museum having a fabulous display of tuataras, including Henry who is 100 years old. We were lucky to see all of the animals out enjoying the sunshine. The staff were very friendly and there is no admission charge, but a donation is appreciated. The museum building also contains a comprehensive information centre (i-SITE) and spotless bathroom facilities.

It was interesting to see Tuatara up close and personal, the art was nice. The Info. Centre was extremely helpful booking my accommodation at my next stop. I wandered out back and visited the rose gardens and duck pond. There is also a really nice playground and a wonderful aviary. Worth a visit, especially if the weather is nice and you head out back.

A tidy little museum with a decent section about Bert Munro (make sure you also go to E Hayes & Sons to see his bikes) and they are also trying to help preserve the Tuatara (if you believe captive breeding is okay). Decent little cafe as well. Plenty of safe parking and easy to get to. Well worth an hour of your time.
