Our flight was delayed about 90 minutes because of fog, but went very well once we were under way. Stewart Island is more developed than we had expected it to be, with accommodations, trails, a "water taxi" to Ulva Island,a protected island that has been freed of invasive animals so that the native animals can flourish and which has many pleasant trails and beaches to enjoy. It was a worthwhile trip, easily accomplished in one day from Invercargill.

20 minute flight from Invercargill across the Foveaux Strait. Fabulous service and good to see how big and beautiful the island is.

Not too much to say, we decided to visit ulva island and treat ourselves to a bush plane flight. It was fun and adventureous, but the best part was that the plan was so small i had to sit next to the pilot on the way back...

On our first trip to Rakiura we chose flights over the ferry.. wanted to save time and avoid lengthy discomfort if weather not so great and I think we did the right thing. The weather on our journey there was gusting over 40 knots - the take off and landing being the worst with some fearful gusts making the tiny plane shudder but our pilot was super skilled and it was all over in about 20 minutes. The return flight was in a light sea breeze and was so relaxing I even managed to take some photos. Would definitely use them again - hopefully we will return one day soon.

Due to the tiny size of the planes you are guaranteed a window seat. Not comfortable for those with long legs as the planes are rather compact.

A lovely scenic journey. Note they weigh the passengers as well as your bags.
