Even though the restaurant was full, we were able to eat at the bar. The food was the same, and it came very quickly. We enjoyed our meal a lot and recommend the place.

My partner and I really enjoyed Speight's Ale House when we were in Dunedin. I really liked the Speights Triple Hop Pilsner and the Distinction beers, and our meals were delicious!

Normally we try not to return to nay places we have been as there are always so many choices but this trip we actually returned after eating here 12 years ago. And not just one but both nights on this visit. First night had a lovely pear salad as our previous trips Lambs Fry and bacon was no longer on the menu. Second night I had Sausages and Mash. Both simple dishes, plenty of more exotic menu choice available but both my meals were great. The Speight's beers make a great thirst quencher to go with whatever you eat. Thankfully both nights we had a good 25 minute walk back to our hotel to help the digestion.

Had two visits to the ale house very good on both occasions. Very large portions so be aware ordering a starter you may regret it later. I struggled on the large lamb shanks as it is two shanks and twice as much veg as the small. Thankfully the Speights Summer ale washed it down.
The ale houses are terrific if you want good basic pub grub the selection is excellent and the service we experienced was top notch no complaints.Given that the staff do not expect a gratuity they give you there attention you would not expect, a far cry from the american model of indiscriminent tipping.
Good idea to book especially on a friday or weekend.

Big isn't always best and that is something to note here. We went into this empty restaurant for lunch and because we had no booking we were placed in a table at the bottom of the stairs outside the kitchen door. At no time during our lunch did any of the other tables get used. Our server did not interact with us and frankly deadpan did not cut it! The meals were large, expensive and mostly left on the plate. This noisy restaurant should not be your fist choice in Dunedin.
