The Law Courts Hotel
Ranked #49 of 61 Hotels in Dunedin
Reviewed September 9, 2009

Upon arriving in Dunedin I had an accomodation guide which was usefull and good advice on all occasions bar this one. We arrived in The Law Courts Hotel around 8pm and asked for a double room which came to $99. I was quite shocked at the totally out of date by about 50 yearsness of the place and I had not actually ever seen a building which carpets its walls in thick pink carpet up to half way then dark green wall paper the rest of the way up, I felt like I had just stepped into a 1960s YMCA. The hall ways up to the room were of a similar state, very old with peeling wall paper and dirty old carpets.

The room itself was very basic. We were staying on the 3rd floor of the hotel in room 308. The room included all the usuals for that sort of price TV, Fridge, ensuit etc. The room did not have double glazzed windows so it let a lot of heat out and a lot of noise in. Being right next to a very busy road it really was noisy. The room was cold and a similar decoration to the rest of the building. The bed was clean however it was very uncomfortable. The ensuit bathroom was covered in mildew and generall dirtyness. The location of the place however is really good and it has its own carpark.

All in all for one night it did the job however it was not a comfortable nights sleep at all. After traveling on we found motels which were 100% nicer and usually costing between $80 to $110, much better value for money. The best thing for this place is to totally gut it out and start again.

The Law Courts Hotel is a beautiful building with it's own bar and restaurant and car park and very fairly priced. We had booked a double ensuite room which was on the top floor (3rd). Our room was big and we had the most enormous bed that I have ever slept in and another single bed in the corner (which housed our suitcase for the 2-nghts we were there). There was also a table and chairs, a small wardrobe, a desk with mirror, fridge and a plasma TV. The bathroom was small but adequate.
The only problem was that our room was on the corner of the building, so we had lots of windows which meant lots of traffic noise. You definately needed earplugs in order to get any sleep.

The hotel was in a great location, a 3-5 minute walk up to the Octagon (town centr) where the restaurants and bars were. We were also a short walk to the Cadbury's factory and the old Railway Station. Incedently we never heard any of the trains from our room.

The staff were helpful, but we stopped off in the bar for a drink on our way back one night and could not access the stairs or lifts from inside as it was all closed off from this side. We had to actually leave the building and walk round the back and use our key to access the building again so we could go up the stairs!

Even though it was a year ago i stayed in this hotel i feel compelled to write a review after reading what the reviewer who stayed in the Scenic Circle hotel said. As a single traveller i was quoted 89 british pounds for a room at the Scenic Circle, as opposed to only 20 bp (60 nz dollars) at the law courts hotel so i've no idea why the other reviewer got a room so cheap there. As a single traveller on a budget, i can tell you the Law Courts room, with its ensuite bathroom, was a welcome break from youth hostel culture. Sure, it's not a boutique hotel but IT IS CHEAP! My room was clean, the staff were sweet, in an old-fashioned-friendly way, and as a woman on her own i felt quite safe and happy to be here. Having said that, I would recommend getting out of Dunedin and heading for the Otago peninsula. Otago was probably my most favourite part of this area with its albatross, sea lions and penguins, Seeing all of this was a joyful experience. I would recommend staying in Portabello if you don't have a car because there is a shop there, a cafe and being central, it is quite easy to get around from here (there is a great walk to lovely Larnach Castle to where you can have a nice lunch).

We drove up to this hotel and asked to view a room to stay at for two nights. We were shown what is probably the nicest room in the hotel, with a king size bed. Rate was $99 per night for the room including cooked breakfast for the two.
This hotel is in a great location, easy walking distance to the centre of the town (and across the road from the Cadbury factory!). The rooms are above a pub and restaurant, and the hotel is full of character. Our room was an okay size, although the bathroom was very small. It was very clean, however.
We ate one night in the downstairs restaurant, which was not great. The service was slow and the food fairly average for the prices.
The hotel is on a busy road, and if you are a light sleeper it may be necessary to make use of the earplugs that were provided in the room.
At the price, this hotel is a great option for a budget traveller and we would certainly stay here again.

We spent one night at this hotel the first part of December and found it vastly overpriced for the condition of the room we were in - old carpet, old bathroom, wallpaper peeling off the walls, etc. The only thing going for it is the downtown location. We ended up moving to the Scenic Circle Hotel nearby at a much lesser rate.
