“Too cramped”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

The location of this hotel is a little far out ,but if you pace your walk back from the centre with museum and church visits its o.k. Our room was comfortable enough, but too warm! The real downside of this place is the inadequate restaurant. They try to cater for far too many people in a cramped area. The queue for the buffet was horrendous, having to stand next to tables where folk were trying to have a meal. The food was o.k. when you got it ,but by then you were past it. The management seemed far more interested in the SCOTTISH events they put on!!!

I stopped at for 1 night in March 2013 in a twin room.

Summary
A Modern, nicely decorated hotel in a quiet area of the City, however located some way out of the main area of the City of Dunedin.

This review is based on my stay in room 408 which is on the ground floor.

The rooms amenities include: 2x double beds with duvets and 4 pillows per bed, kettle, tea & coffee, iron & board, flat screen TV, ample luggage space, table & chairs, plenty of storage space.

Hotel amenities include:- restaurant/bar, landscapes gardens, internet access

Located some way out of Dunedin City Centre (if on foot), but is within walking distance for the more fit visitor, adjacent to Dunedin Botanical Gardens.

My Room (408) is located in a busy area, where every one has to walk past to get to the restaurant, bar, reception etc and therefore can be a little noisy. The room it's self was nicely decorated, clean and the beds were nice and comfy. There is a patio door, which opens up into the lovely hotel grounds, however room 408 literally opens out onto the flower beds, the hotel have provided stepping stones, but you still have to dodge the shrubbery.

The reception and bar area are modern and open, they also provide 30 minutes of free WIFI per day located in this area, where as this is a welcome addition the internet can be a little slow.

Breakfast was included in the room rate and is buffet style with all the usual fair of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, baked beans, tomatoes, selection of breads/toast, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, fruit juice, tea & coffee

I ate in the restaurant on the night I stayed there, I had the Scottish Ceremony with the haggis and bagpipes, to celebrate the Scottish heritage of the city of Dunedin which has a Scottish feel throughout the city. The ceremony was followed by a 3 course self service buffet, which had lots of choice, but the vegetarian option was poor (samosa's and salad).

The mercure Leisure Lodge is one of the better hotels I stopped in on my tour of New Zealand and despite it's location away from the City, I would stop here again.

Two story building in a residental area,a good way out of the town.Small public areas, nice gardens at back.We were treated to a haggis ceremony, complete with piper and that poem!
The buffet breakfast and dinner was nice, with carvery options, although it did get a bit busy at times. The staff, as in most hotels in New Zealand we stayed in, were nice and helpful.

Room Tip: the ground floor rooms open out onto nice gardens.

This was the last stop on our coach tour of New Zealand and we stayed for 3 nights when 1 would have been more than enough. The hotel is set in the middle of student land and a walk around the hotel gives views of unkempt houses with gardens overflowing with rubbish bins, dead mattresses and worn out sofas. The hotel staff approach was somewhat clinical and it appeared that questions were resented and although the room was adequate, reasonably comfortable and satisfactorily serviced it lacked warmth. The Internet provision was very poor however the greatest disappointment was the food. Minimum choice and poorly presented and when my wife asked for a fried egg at breakfast instead of the long congealed scrambled egg on the counter it was murdered (see attached picture). It was sad to end a marvellous trip to New Zealand on such a sour note but this is how we saw it.

Mercure always seem to offer a high standard and this establisment is no different. The rooms are modern, comfortable and bigger than most. I arrived on a hot day and the room was rather warm. However once I had opened the window and the door onto the balcony it sooned cooled down. The staff were helpful, and the first 30 minutes of wifi was free.

What sets this place apart fro other hotels is it's setting. It felt like an oasis on a busy route. Despite being on the main road North, and in the heart of "scarfie" (Dunedin Students are "scarfies") there was no outside noise into the room. I really enjoyed my stay.

It was great to find this hotel in the Accor group. The location is very good if you have a car. Close to the city and main arterials. The morning walk in the botanic gardens just across the road was delightful. The restaurant food was good as was the service.

My rating for the room is 3 star.
No bath, no air conditioning, no safe.
Wifi six dollars for 25 minutes.
The evening buffet was quite good, and was preceded by the haggis ceremony, which was very good and funny.
