Save your $$, this was pretty boring. The high point was getting our tickets at the gorgeous train station in Dunedin .

Hello and thanks for taking the time to review Taieri Gorge Railway.
Of course I am a bit disappointed to see you thought the trip was boring but can not expect everyone to think it is as good as we do.
Maybe next time you could take our Seasider service which has totally different scenery and some people even think it is our best trip!!!
Thanks once again.

“Pleasant afternoon trip into the country”
Reviewed December 12, 2013

Like a trip back to an earlier time riding the rails through the countryside. Took the hour hour round trip with lots of narrative from the crew. Not enough gluten free food options onboard the dining car.

Hello and thanks for taking the time to review Taieri Gorge Railway.
Good to see you enjoyed your train trip - it is an pleasant trip indeed.
You have a good point about our buffet car and gluten free options - we have upgraded this service recently and there are a few more items that are gluten free now. Thanks for your comments - these are always taken on board (excuse the pun) and many times our services are improved thanks to reviews on sites like trip advisor.
Thanks and we hope to see you aboard another time.

“A bit overhyped maybe? But great customer service from Murrary”
Reviewed December 11, 2013

First a big tip to others. Believe it or not, there is more than one platform at Dunedin. The large trains used when a cruise ship comes into Dunedin use platform one. So if there is a large train (on platform one) discharging pax, you may find the smaller train you want is sitting in the much smaller siding/platform around 100m further along from the booking hall (but still accessed by turning right along platform one).

Customer service (from Murray) in the booking process was great. We went in 'low season' at the beginning of the NZ summer so didn't bother to try and book until the last minute... and Murray was kind enough to send us confirmation (of our late booking) at 8pm in the evening.

But the actual train ride is a bit oversold in my opinion.

Certainly the engineering to get a railway through the gorge was very challenging as we are told they largely had to use pick and shovels; dynamite was considered too risky.

But this is a four hour journey (two hours there and two hours back) and it wasn't long before half of my carriage was dozing off or breaking open the Chardonnay.

To keep our interest up, we had a non-stop commentary and I mean non-stop. All well-intentioned but perhaps the rule of 'less is more' would be best applied so that the passengers can focus on all the good bits and the remaining 75% of trivia gets left unsaid.

Hello and thanks for your review of Taieri Gorge Railway.
We endevour to answer our emails as quickly as possible so it is not entirely unusual to receive emails at out of office hours - we have several staff who are able to do this. Murray who is the boss does this on a frequent basis. I am glad you thought it was great service as this is one of our company's objectives.
We market our train trip using customer testimonials so we do not believe it is over hyped - we are merely using what our customers have told us in the past about what they think of our scenic trip.
The commentary is a tricky point - we do get passengers asking for more and some asking for less so we are working on this right now to come to an agreeable balance of getting the maximum amount of information across without being disruptive to the our passengers.
Thanks once again for your review and we hope to see you aboard another time.

“Scenic rail journey”
Reviewed December 5, 2013

What a great train ride. The staff were extremely helpful especially one who phoned through to get us a shuttle to Dunedin airport. The train stopped at Wingatui, just especially for 5 of us, as this stop is the closest to the airport and saved us some money on the taxi fare. I can't thank the train staff enough for their thoughtfulness and friendliness. Great southern hospitality! Even if the old fella gave us a hard time about being 'Aucklanders'! Ha Ha
The train journey was very scenic and well worth it. And the train was very cool as well - old carriages which you could stand outside to take pictures.

Hello and thanks for your review! Glad you enjoyed the trip and the gentle teasing from our staff. We like to provide an informative and enjoyable trip but also enjoy having fun with our passengers.
Glad we could help you get off closer to the airport. This is a very convinient stop for passengers and does save you time and money to get on or off the train at this point if you are carrying on to the airport.
Hope to see you back on board another time.

“Beautiful scenery but less commentary please”
Reviewed December 5, 2013

We saw the train sitting at the platform on our first trip to Dunedin and decided to do train journey if we made it back there. We only had the option to go as far as Pukerangi based on the time & day that we booked for. At the end of the day, we were glad the train ride was not longer. The drone of the commentary was just a bit too much and went on and on throughout the journey. It was also a cloudy gloomy day which made the train ride seemed very long. We would have preferred short commentary of interesting facts and viewpoints so that we could enjoy the scenery in peace. The scenery was beautiful,, the intense yellow gorse and broom blooming everywhere were pretty but also showed how badly they are taking over/strangling the native plants in that area. We were surprised and enjoyed the opportunity to walk on the viaduct. We also appreciate how a few enthusiasts managed to keep this historic line open so that we may still enjoy the spectacular scenery along the gorge.

Hi and thanks for taking the time to review Taieri Gorge Railway.
Our commentary is a difficult one to correct - many people ask for more commentary and many people ask for less like yourself. It is difficult to come to an ideal amount. We are currently working with our five or six train managers to try to get the maximum amount of information delivered at a level that is neither going to be too little or too much.
Many thanks for your comments - this is very helpful to us.
We hope to see you aboard another time.
