Owner description: A highlight of your visit to Dunedin is a trip on the Taieri Gorge Railway - one of the world's great train trips and one of Dunedin's top attractions. Departing daily from downtown Dunedin into the Taieri Gorge, this trip travels through some of New Zealand's most beautiful and ever changing scenery which can not seen from the road! With sightseeing stops, on board cafe, outside viewing platforms it is the perfect all weather activity and one of the key attractions in Dunedin - not to be missed.

I have had a love affair with trains since i was quite little, i came to Dunedin to have a trip on Taieri Gorges latest venture the silver fern rail car day trip to Oamaru. What a fantastic day out, the trip from Dunedin follows the coast most of the way, the scenery is to behold, its breath taking and once we arrive in Oamaru you have 5 hours to explore the old town precinct, and the harbour area. Heaps of places to eat, shops to explore and things to do, If you haven,t taken a train trip for some time then this is a must, its a real gem.

Hello and thanks for the review! It is true - our latest acquisition is a Silver fern rail car and has been rebranded the Dunedin Silver Fern. It is currently being used on some excursions to Oamaru and short trips up the very scenic bit of railway line north of Dunedin to Waitati. These take one and a half hours and are really good for visitors to Dunedin who only have a short time.
Thanks for your time - I enjoyed reading your comments.

We thoroughly enjoyed the trip on the train and the scenery on the way. We found the start of the journey confusing and time consuming. It seemed that the cruise ship in town had caused problems on the platforms and we were given conflicting advice. Our trip was delayed for at least an hour while arrangements were made to return ship passengers to their boat.

Hello and thanks for your review of Taieri Gorge Railway. I do apologise for the delay caused by the train run for cruise ship passengers. On days when cruise ships are in town we do occassionally get held up and this unfortunately makes the other trains run late. We do try our best to make up time but at the same time we do not want to compromise the experience.
I am glad you enjoyed the trip anyway and hope to see you back one day.

There was never such a great train ride as 12 friends took on the Taieri Gorge Railway. We managed to get into one of the oldest coaches, over a hundred years old but well maintained, manned by our volunteer guides Ross and Isabella. The scenery was wonderful, the volunteers were friendly and humorous, informative and served us meals and wine and beer throughout the day. Beautiful scenery, nostalgia and occasional stops for photos. Wonderful day adventure for a group!

We rode the Taieri Gorge train as a part of a Celebrity Cruises shore excursion, for our day in Dunedin. We had a wonderful trip - the scenery, particularly in the higher elevations, was truly beautiful. We loved the fact that the train itself pulled directly up to the ship! Very different, to not have to take a coach to our destination, rather, to have the train itself pull up directly to the ship, we loved that. A super fresh healthy lunch was served on board, which we found quite nice - flavorful, healthy, just right. The train made two stops along the route which allowed the passengers to get off and shop at stalls where local artisans had set out their wares. The first stop, we found, had the best/most authentic, local products. During the journey, excellent commentary was given about the history, the sites - all points of interest.

What a great way to start my trip. The ride was great and, of course, you can not fault the scenery. I met some lovely people on this train. Differently up with my expectations.
