This is a small museum but it has lots of things to look at and explore. It is excellent for children.

Despite visiting on two days, I didn't spend nearly enough time there to absorb all the magnificent items on display. Partly this was due to me spending much of my time in the excellent research facility. For anyone researching their relatives that settled in the area, its Oases computer-based database is not to be missed. It's a superb user-friendly resource full of gold nuggets of information that includes references ("Citations") as to where the information has come from. The compiler, Bob Matthews, is to be commended for the enormous amount of work he has put into it. Oases is not the only resource there, but I was so busy using it I had little time left to explore the others.
The only black spot in our visit was the restaurant there. It had a "Special" of sardines, olives & bread. It sounded interesting but I was served a half-opened can of sardines, 3 olives & 3 small pieces of buttered bread. Was this meant to represent what our immigrant ancestors ate during their voyage here? If so, they should have said so!

Spent a couple of hour here and could easily have spent more had we had more time. The museum has been completely revamped and what they have done is just fantastic. An great selection of artefacts, interactive displays, various replicas of transport, an old, original house and passenger ship. There is still a large Maori element which is great to see. You could spend a couple of hours each day looking at all, there is to see, listen to and touch in this museum.

This is the best social history museum I have ever visited. It is well thought out and provides many interactive displays. Easily spent a couple of hours here soaking up the story of Dunedin and would return again to learn more if ever back there. Highly recommended.

This is a very good, but not great museum. Nonetheless, I give it ***** for variety, atmosphere, lots of unexpected findings, and free admissiion. Sure, there are artifacts and exhibits on early setllers but the museum has loads of ther stuff, and is way way bigger than it appears if you enter from one fo the side entrances. Costumes, weapons, cars, a locomotive, trolley cars, portraits ... really a lot of stuff here. With free admission, you can take as much or little time as you feel like, perhaps leaving a suitable donation.
