“Good mango chicken”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

We had the lamb korma and mango chicken, which we requested mild--and it was really mild. Should have asked for a little more heat. Beautifully decorated and excellent service.

“Great, accommodating service, very good food.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2012 via mobile

We ate here twice while we were in Dunedin and both times the food was great and the service polite and prompt. And they even provide steaming hot flannels prior to dinner, just like you we're really in south-easy Asia!

The decor was new, lighting subdued and music thematically appropriate.

The second time we ate here we arrived a little before opening time. Not a problem, the staff happily opened early and served us promptly.

I'd eat here again, and happily recommend it to a friend.

Oh! Final thing, the prices were very good.

“Tasty and economical”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2012

When we are in the mood for Indian food we usually go to Little India, an Indian chain restaurant with 17 locations around New Zealand. The original is in Dunedin and is reputed to be the best in the chain. We always enjoy our meals at Little India, though sometimes they can overcook the tandoori chicken and lamb, and, thus, dry them out.

So when we heard that a new Indian restaurant, Shahi Tandoor, was serving up some pretty good tandoori dishes (and at a lower price to boot), we had to check it out.
I am happy to report that the tandoori chicken (Tandoori Murgh) was beautifully seasoned, tender and moist.

We also ordered two curries: Chicken Dahiwala, chicken cooked in a tomatoes and yogurt; and Lamb Madras. They were both delicious and not oily (I read an online review that complained of oily Rogan Josh here). We also had naan, which was perfectly fine, but thinner and more delicate than we are used to. It also had a tad too much melted ghee brushed on it. The samosas were the only true disappointment: the pastry was heavy and thick, the filling was on the dry side and could have used more spice.

Overall, though, we were pleased with our meal and will return. We would not hesitate to order the tandoori dishes, and the very same curries, but will skip the samosas next time.

They were out of several things when we were there.

The service was good and this the restaurant is licensed as well as BYO. It gets busy on the weekends with students from the nearby university, so if you want a more serene setting go on a weeknight.

“Love this place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2012

Good service and location, great curries, perfect naan. How do they do it for the price? The challenging decor (all orange, brilliantly overlit) is the only downside. Try the house specialty Chicken Patiala.
