My husband and I spent our second wedding anniversary at this gorgeous wee spot. We are from Dunedin and wanted a night away without spending too much time travelling. Hereweka met all our expectations and more. The bed and linen were amazing and the shower definitely needs to be experienced! We were welcome to use the fresh vegetables and herbs growing which we thought was a lovely idea and supplied with beautiful breakfast foods. The weekend was also a great opportunity for us to explore the Otago Peninsula a little more with a lovely walk along Allans beach on a stormy, windy day and a drive down to Cape Saunders. We will certainly be back and cant want for the opportunity to give a nights accommodation as a gift to someone for a special occasion.

My partner and I spent a night at Hereweka Garden Retreat and it was just perfect. We would have loved to stay extra nights and we will come back for sure.
The hosts, Anna and Peter, are very welcoming and friendly.
The self-contained house is built with natural and eco-friendly materials. We could smell the sent of the wood when got inside and felt very welcomed by the fireplace. The evening we asked for an extra service and we had beautiful fresh ravioli and tiramisu’ prepared by the Italian chef. We had a wonderful sleep on the comfortable king size latex mattress and the cotton and crisp linen.
In the morning we had an unforgettable shower (that just its self is worth going to Hereweka): while being under the hot water, you can open the glass door on the terrace, in front of the rising sun, over the trees, looking at the amazing Hoopers Inlet in Otago Peninsula.
Then we had a real espresso coffee (very important for us), organic and fresh grinded, with a tasty and organic home made bread baked the day before (plus local honey, jam and eggs from hosts’ hens).
Later, we took a tour of the garden that is big, spectacular, with plants and trees from the entire world. Peter later told us about a secret spot of the garden where trees of ancient times grow. Ask him about it!

Hereweka garden retreat is everything we could have hoped for in terms of a tranquil, relaxing mini break. Stunning view, bush, birds, garden. Crisp linen, fluffy towels and beautiful bed with little balcony leading out to flowering, fragrant cabbage tree. Big decks off living area, like being in a tree house. Cozy fire, amazing indoor outdoor shower. Lovely organic and homemade food. Great hosts. Bush tracks on property and walk up to volcanic cone. Great coffee. Absolutely plush, thanks!!!

We returned to Australia last week after four pleasant nights at Hereweka Garden Retreat. We booked for three nights but stayed an extra night because we enjoyed our stay so much. Like previous guests, we appreciated the warm welcome from Anna, Peter and Fern the dog, along with the fresh bread, eggs, and homemade muesli and preserves for breakfast. And yes, the shower is spectacular. If you are arriving at night don't do what we did and rely on the web-generated driving directions from the Automobile Association. This was our first visit to New Zealand. We couldn't have had a better introduction than Dunedin, the Otago Peninsula and Hereweka Garden Retreat.

Hereweka Garden Retreat was our fourth stop on the South Island during our trip around New Zealand. It is set in the most stunning location on the Otago Peninsula. It is also in a great location for visiting the various attractions on the Peninsula. During our stay, we were lucky enough to see a wonderful array of wildlife. This included; albatross, penguins, kingfishers, spoonbills, birds of prey and much, much more. The cottage is very well appointed and the glass shower deserves particular mention. Anna and Peter were lovely hosts. This is one of the most relaxing places we have ever stayed and would have no hesitation in recommending it as a wonderful place to stay if you are looking to totally relax and unwind.

Thank you for your review. You were certainly lucky to time it so well with the wildlife when you went walking on the beach. Hope you are enjoying your spring. We are having a fabulous autumn . The intensity of the leaf colour is spectacular. It must be because of the unusually dry and hot summer we had this year.

The cottage is very spacious, comfortable, quiet and clean. Perfect place to relax and enjoy, even if the weather is not on your side! The hosts are perfect and we really appreciated the attention to details they have, including the delicious home made bread they provide, preserves and jams as well as the organic muesli. We stayed for (only) 2 nights, but we will go back for more if we ever return to New Zealand.

We stayed at Hereweka Garden Retreat for several days of 'relaxation therapy', and it was the perfect destination for this - quiet, self-contained accommodation in a beautiful location on the Otago Peninsula. As mentioned in other reviews the Retreat is very well appointed, with a comfortable bed, well equipped kitchen, and wonderful bathroom (with great views!).

Peter and Anna are very friendly people and great hosts. Unfortunately I had picked up a stomach bug just before the start of our holiday, however Peter (who is the local GP) was at hand with some medical advice and pharmaceuticals. This combined with rest, healthy food, and fresh air, enabled me to recover quickly and soon we were out exploring.

The Retreat is perfectly placed for visiting the various Peninsula attractions (albatross colony, penguins, sea lions, Larnarch castle, walking trails, beaches, etc), as well as being in the middle of Peter and Anna’s own beautiful garden. The quiet and peaceful location allowed us to unwind and recover from a fairly stressful start to the year, we would certainly recommend it for anyone looking for a luxurious holiday escape.
