Owner description: Explore an authentic example of a Chinese scholar's garden that celebrates the Chinese influence on Otago's history and heritage. The Garden Gift Shop offers the chance to find something culturally different while the Tea House allows you to take your taste buds on their very own tour of China. The garden is open every day expect Christmas Day. As one of only three gardens outside China and the only one in the Southern Hemisphere, it is a truly captivating cultural experience not to be missed.

Loved dressing up in the meeting room where the kids were challenged by national games. Fed the fish too and even bought a Thai coat for our 3 year old granddaughter

Lovely peaceful place to visit and convenient to walk there. Good parking if you drive there. The fish are awesome to watch.

We saw the back of what looked like a temple as we arrived in Dunedin on a train after completing the Otago rail trail. We worked out from brochures at our hotel what this must be and decided to give it a go despite both Chinese and gardens not being 'our thing' to do. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
The gardens are deceptively large - a bit like entering Dr. who's Tardis...although there is little garden and far more lake! The many walkways around, across and through rockery lead you to tranquil seating and views where one can sit and contemplate. I particularly liked finding the unexpected little vistas tucked away here and there.
It's not just about gardens though, there are games to play, Chinese clothes to dress up in and proper Chinese teas to savour. I had oolong which was delicious.
You could whip around in 10 minutes, or while away an afternoon, which we did, and came away feeling calm and refreshed.

Many thanks for your kind words about the Garden! We pride ourselves on the peace and tranquility the Garden brings, and think the term 'Oasis in the City', provides a pretty apt description. We're so glad you enjoyed yourselves, and hope that you will visit us again in the future!
With the warmest regards
The Dunedin Chinese Garden Team :)

Absolutely beautiful location - a real oasis of tranquility in Dunedin, and (to my surprise!) well worth the entrance fee! I loved just being there, and looking around. Thee wall plaques are unobtrusive but help explain the way the garden is set out, and the purposes it serves - they were very interesting. Better than that, though, there is a room full of books you can read about Chinese culture (tea, architecture, art culture), and games to play, and all sorts - as well as the tea house, which offers truly lovely teas and Chinese snacks (dumplings, buns, crackers, ice cream) at extrenely good prices. I went here twice in my week in Dunedin, it's an amazing place!
