We found this beach in our NZ Frenzy book and had to go. A couple of suggestions if you decide to go. One, go around low tide to access the tunnel. Two, the gravel path is steep. I wore Tevas and slid on the gravel and scraped my knee. Sturdy shoes would be better. Three, the trip back up is a steep ascent.
The path down winds its way to the cliffs and land bridge over the ocean and there are spectacular views on the way. Walking on the land bridge feels like an end-of-the-earth experience, but care should be given around the cliffs as it can be very windy.
When you find the tunnel, walk down inside to the cove at the bottom. It is like a secret beach surrounded by crazy limestone formations. You can get great pictures of the rocks and the surf. We sat a while on a rock just enjoying this special place.
We loved our visit here and can highly recommend it when in Dunedin.
