We stayed at Hogwartz over Christmas and had a really nice stay. It was very quiet, particularly compared to other backpackers we stayed at. The rooms and facilities were well equipped and kept clean and the laundry service for the same price as coin operated was a nice perk. The deck was a great place to spend some time on Christmas day catching up on email. Note that you do need to negotiate some pretty steep hills to get to Hogwartz, but that is true of most of Dunedin.

This was the first hostel that myself and my 12yr old stayed in during our trip to NZ. Quite a big hostel but plenty of places to get away from other people and just chill.
Kitchen well organized and clean. Close to centre of town although I wouldn't have like to have to walk the hill all the time.
Stayed in an upstairs twin room with lots of space and even had reading lights above the beds.

Stayed three nights here and it was ideal - you can walk to the octagon in ten minutes and to the speights brewery in 5, the place felt very secure and welcoming. There is a big kitchen with plenty of cooking utensils and a second kitchen if the first one is too busy. They have a tv room as well as a dining/hang out area with a really sweet little mezzanine that you get to by climbing a ladder-type staircase. Hot showers, a computer available to use the Internet (a dollar for 15 mins), everything was clean and well maintained, this place has a lovely quirky charm about it because of the building and the location up a little hidden stairwell. Oh and there is a cute dog called asterix you might see every now and again!

Some parts were great - spacious rooms and new bathrooms were one. However kitchen was a nightmare (unless you stayed at the coachouse and had a private kitchen). Far too small and limited storage and squables all of the time about whose turn it was to use it. Also bathrooms new but not cleaned regularly - unisex toillets so this was not great. Limited hand basins and again squables to get to, when the hostel was full. tv room spelled like boys sweaty sox. OWNERS absent - currently managed by young students who were very proficient, however as reviews on Hogwartz web page were all compiled at least 4 years ago and self selected by owners, be aware. Average as far as quality backpapckers are concerned - not a patch on Turangi BBH!

Room Tip: Larger rooms are noisy, but more comfortable. Coach house best for families

What a lovely place!

We stayed in the downstairs double room in the coach house, which is to the back of the hostel. You still get all the access to the hostel if needed.

This is a newly renovated and gorgeous country cottage. The cottage has two double rooms, but you are able to book just one room. Upstairs is a new kitchen and small dining area. There is a bedroom and bathroom. We had the downstairs area to ourselves, with a fabulous bathroom, excellent shower and our own front door and car space. Even though this cottage is shared, you have your privacy as each bedroom is only accessible with a key, so you cannot access the other bedroom. The only area that is shared is the kitchen.

The hostel itself has a wonderful feel. There are loads of DVDs to watch that you can borrow and take back to your room. There are many board games and books to borrow and a cute little loft to read or play games in. The dining room is lovely, as is the kitchen.

We really recommend this hostel for so many reasons! And to top it off, it's close to the Octagon (city centre) and Speight's brewery. Plus free wifi, however we had to go into the hostel to use the wifi as you couldn't access it from our cottage. The only negative was that the downstairs room's tv did not pick up any tv stations, so we could only watch DVDs. The upstairs room's tv was fine though.

Great place!

Lovely hostel! Really friendly staff. Nice and clean. Nice kitchen. We stayed in a 4 bed room, nice view, no bunk beds, high to the ceiling. So impressive building! Lots of time spent on the terass in the sun! Really made our stay in Dunedin!

We didn't stay inside the hostel but in a separate building they refer too as the stables. This was a double room with a kitchen and a great(!) shower. It has a lot of charm as it is a renovated building and they kept the details. At a date of a 100$ per night you get a luxurious, clean and charming room right in the middle of the town. That's cheaper than most motel rooms and a lot better!
