“Ok for budget traveller”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

Stayed 2 nights at Central backpackers hostel due to tight budget. The room is clean but it might get a bit noisy at night as it is located at town center and busy street. Sound proof of the room is not so good as when next door closes the door, you can here it very clearly. If you opt for a more quite sleeping place, this is not recommended.

Kitchen is big but travellers do not really take good care of it and it can get quite messy if you in there late for cooking. Overall, it's ok for a budget stay.

The hostel is bang in the middle of town - excellent for seeing Dunedin (including 2 mins from the Cadbury's factory). Only downside to location is that parking is not easy to find.
The staff are friendly, the kitchen is reasonably well-equipped, the rooms are kept clean, and the showers are powerful. But there are too few showers / toilets, and the bathroom area is quite cramped.
Overall, a good choice, but not luxurious (even by hostel standards).

As other reviews have said the towel hire is expensive and the communal area small but comfortable. Kitchen is good though only has seats for 18 in a hostel that sleeps over 40. Friendly owners who were very helpful in planning how to while away our days. Beds comfortable, rooms spacious and the hottest and most powerful showers I have found in the last seven months of traveling.

Spent a night in this backpacker but do not like the atmosphere especially the kitchen as most of the time is crowded with people and the ventilation there is poor. The cleanliness is also a big question mark.
Besides, the room is very basic which not worth to the price you paid.
Of course, one plus point is the good location where you may access to the tourist spots easily.
Try to avoid if you are travelling in a couple or with family as it would not be a right choice for you.

This was a clean, well-run hostel with a very helpful staff. In fact, 10 minutes after I arrived, the staff were able to arrange for a tour on the Otago Peninsula, and the timing was such that I was in a tour van 5 minutes later on my way to see wildlife on the Otago.
I had my own room and shared the common bathroom. Everything looks clean, but the hostel's furnishings are a little dated and should probably be considered for refurbishment in the next year or so. But it is definitely a good choice for a night or two in Dunedin.

I've spent about 5 days in this hostel and it was a good stay.
Located in the city centre, near the Octagon, i-site, art galleries, bus stops, shops, restaurant, post office, library and shopping streets. New World & Countdown supermarkets are just 10 mins walk away.
Easy access to most of the main attractions around Dunedin city such as the railway station, octagon, cadbury's world, speight's brewery etc. Also, it's near to the Intercity bus terminal.
Kitchen is clean & neat, free wifi connection (fast & awesome connection, probably one of the fastest wifi connection that i ever experienced in NZ), bed is comfortable.
Staffs are helpful and willing to share their knowledge about the city
p/s: there's a cat in the hostel.

Spent two nights with my husband in this hostel. Simple yet modern kitchen, decent shared bathroom facilities, incredible location. Rooms are a bit lacking in windows but thats what you get in the center of a city. Our only major complaints was the mattress: seriously excruciatingly uncomfortable.
