“The nicest meal i've had in NZ”
Reviewed February 15, 2011

I've been here for both brunch and dinner, both were excellent, but dinner really excelled. The atmosphere at night is so lovely, it's quite a small, intimate place with lots of little twinkling nightlights and cheerful staff. It's very romantic but also lively enough to go in groups of friends. The menu is compact, but inventive and delicious. The prices are slightly higher than other places in Sumner, but the jump in quality is vast. There is usually a locally sourced wine which is recommended on the chalk boards, as well as a cocktail of the week. It's by far the nicest food i've eaten since i've been in NZ and i think most of Sumner feel the same as it is always full even on week days.

“Nice ...”
Reviewed May 28, 2010

We were staying in Christchurch and drove to Sumner for dinner, as recommended by a friend. Our friend said that the drive over would be scenic. Alas we were a bit late, as it was autumn and it got dark earlier than anticipated. Consequently, we drove there in the dark but at the same time, it was really rather early (6 pm) for dinner. We saw the Cornershop Bistro first but decided to walk around the town to see if there weren't anywhere else that grab our fancy. There wasn't, so we headed back and got the last unreserved table ! So pleased that we did. The food was very good and the service was unhurried but attentive. We had Beef bourguignon and the market fish. Lovely !! The Sticky Date Pudding was gorgeous and the Chocolate Marquise was divine The wine list was good and glad to see they sold a good number of them by the glass..

Was it good value? Well, we live in London, so this was a bargain for the kind of food we had. By the time we left, the place was buzzing - a testament to how good this restaurant was.
