“Our best meal in New Zealand - possibly the best ever”
Reviewed February 28, 2014

This was a truly amazing restaurant. The food was divine, the drinks were great and the service was excellent. We had the rabbit terrine and the scallops as a starter, the pork for our main (both), and the banana parfait and the raspberry/rhubarb desserts. The courses just got better and better, and they were excellent to start with. The flavours were great, not too sweet or too strong, and the food made us try to guess what the ingredients were, as some appeared on the menu to be a bit random, but put together were really tasty. Our hostess Danielle was a delight. She was friendly, gave good advice about wines and was knowledgable about how the food was cooked. When we booked the restaurant, at short notice, we were asked if it was a special occasion. We said that it was the last night of our honeymoon, and at the end of the meal (we had managed to fit in 3 courses, and glad we had skipped lunch) we were presented with a selection of small fudge, mango jelly, granola and strawberry pieces with the words Congratulations piped onto the plate. This was a lovely gesture and Danielle took our photo with it.

Overall, this restaurant was possibly the best meal we've ever had. Everything was delicious and there was not one fault. We've eaten in various restaurants throughout the world, including some Michelin starred ones (not many though) and this excelled expectations. The price was also very reasonable considering. We had a bottle of wine, a couple of cocktails and a couple of beers as well. If you can afford the prices on the menu, please visit 50 Bistro. It's is a delight to the senses.

Dear Chris,

Thank you for your positive comments. There is a chance that you may be referring to our other restaurant, Pescatore, as 50 Bistro does not offer a degustation menu.

Both restaurants offer excellent cuisine however and we appreciate you taking the time to post this review.

“Much better than I expected”
Reviewed February 8, 2014

I don't usually eat in hotel restaurants, but thought I would try this restaurant based on the Tripadvisor reviews (plus the fact that all the central Christchurch restaurants have been destroyed). Anyway, it was a wonderful experience. First some great craft beers, then a good wine list. The presentation and flavours of the food were amazing. Rabbit farmhouse terrine is definitely recommended. Service was also very good. And this is only the number 2 restaurant at the George!

one of the best meals we have ever had, we have been fortunate to have eaten in some wonderful restaurants overseas in uk, Europe Australia and Auckland and this was possibly the best eye fillet i have ever eaten, i had the wild boar ragu to start which was amazing, so many flavors, and my husband had scallops, he said they were the best he has eaten, hubbie had the lamb which he said was divine and i had the fillet steak, the two mains were $38 each with a choice of side we had a bottle of wine and two long gin and tonics all in all the meal came to $196 which for the amount and quality of the food was great value, well done 50 Bistro, great service, great food and lovely ambiance, will definitely visit 50 bistro again if ever we are in christchurch. :)
