“Exceptional!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2013

A simply superb dining experience. We were a party of six booked for a celebration graduation dinner. Made up of three generations - and were five meat eaters a vegan. I had asked for a table that would be suitable for a few little speeches and we were seated in the perfect place. Our waitress was superb. She was calm and professional, yet friendly and immediately caught on to the mood of our celebration, offering champagne to start, a group photo - and even asking the chef to make special "Congratulations" plate for my son. The food was all exceptional. Maybe the portions area bit to generous!! Just kidding, everyone was delighted. And for me especially it was wonderful, I am the vegan and restaurant eating can be challenging. A wonderful dish was prepared - a real meal (you often just get a salad) with an exquisite dressing. We were not rushed and had a fabulous evening to round off four years of hard study by the graduate. Would HIHGHLY recommend.

“Fantastic birthday treat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

I went here with my parents and fiance for a recent birthday and it was fabulous. We shared the breads for a start (amazing mushroom whip and divine brioche) and then had three meals off 'The Grill' - Fillet, Ribeye and Salmon and the Venison. Fillet was in the top steaks I've ever had, beautifully cooked with yummy potatoes and luscious bearnaise sauce. For dessert we shared a 'Chocolate four ways' and 'Strawberry and Cream', both beautifully presented and awesome flavours. I then got a treat 'happy birthday' plate with some sweet treats, almost too beautiful to eat!

“Try the desserts!!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2013

Lovely choice of menu to suit a couple who are combination of avid meat eater and vegetarian!!!! Tried both steak and lamb both excellent, but you must leave room to try the puddings irrespective of how full you feel, they are so innovative. Excellent personal service and good selection of wines at reasonable prices

“Lovely lunch spot”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2013

We haven't been here for ages and haven't booked. Rocking up just before three. We are greeted pleasantly by the maitre'd and offered us our choice of tables. We choose a window table set for two. Our charming waitress presents the menus and informs us of todays soup and fresh fish. Iced water appears and two glasses of Waipara Springs chardonnay poured at the table which is always a good sign. We order an entree Waldorf salad I choose Pork picatta main and my husband the Groper with a side of soft and crispy potatoes.
50 Bistro has had an excellant refit. A smart new outdoor area links well with the original restaurant. A clever mix of leather, wood and white linen. Good lighting. Jazz on the sound system fits the feel of the wet afternoon. Our table is perfect for people watching.
Our Waldorf arrives, its our first, though we know all about from one of our favourite episodes of Fawlty Towers! Crisp lettuce, apple chunks, walnuts and celery bound with a thin yoghurt dressing. Fresh and clean but feel a mayo would have held it better. Serving cutlery would have been appreciated, trying to spoon the salad on to our plates with a knife and fork was messy.
Two more glasses of wine and our mains arrive. Wish I had also chosen the fish. Beautiful presentation on cauliflower puree with peas and pancetta. Perfectly cooked its wonderful [and at $24 a bargain] Pork was a new dish and we were asked for feedback. It wasn't as pretty as the fish. Pork a little overcooked, under seasoned and the combination of cooked and dried swiss browns not that successful. Dried mushrooms very hard to swallow, 3 capers added some sharpness. Potato arrived a little late. Teeny serve of very delicious potato puree in a cute mini saucepan with 3 wisps of deep fried potato crisps. Again a serving spoon would have been good. Plates cleared and feedback passed on to the kitchen. The lovely waitress reappears to give feedback to my feedback and offers dessert and coffee. We decline and polish off our wine and enjoy watching the guests checking in. This is a very comfortable place. Lunch prices are very good, staff are well trained and the food is of a high standard. Happily return and recommend.

“Disappointed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2013

Rang to make a reservation for my wife & I. Was asked any special occasion? - yes my wife's birthday. Expectation set! Arrived, enjoyed 3 courses of fabulous food and wine. Visit to the bathroom while cheque was processed where my wife passed on my disappointment re our expectation not being met or acknowledged! As we left the restaurant a waiter followed us into the car park with a plate of food to acknowledge my wife's birthday - too late, bizarre!!!! Someone dropped the ball or the 'systems' need to be upgraded. Also noted the table dining next to us had to get up and go ask for cutlery for their mains - brains not engaged that night???

Dear gokiwi,

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on TripAdvisor.

I am glad that you and your wife enjoyed the food and beverage we served. It is most concerning however to hear of the circumstances that occurred regarding lack of recognition of your special occasion. You are perfectly correct in that having ourselves created the expectation, we need to deliver on it. While I am confident that we get this right on the vast majority of situations, it would appear on this occasion we dropped the ball.

Not only that but our recovery was poor and not at all well thought out. I would like to assure you that your feedback has been passed on to our Food & Beverage Manager for him to actively address with all his team to ensure that similar circumstances are not repeated in the future. Please accept our sincere apologies for the frustration this caused you and your wife at the time.

Many thanks once again for taking the time to provide us with your feedback and for bringing your concerns to our attention. We do hope we will have another opportunity in the future to be able to welcome you back to 50 Bistro at The George.
