“What a lovely B and B”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2010

We found this B and B on Christchurch tourist information website. It is brilliant - close to the city centre and the airport, yet in a quiet location. Gaye is a wonderful host, the gardens are lovely, the breakfasts are generous and guests may use the lounge, conservatory and swimming pool. We would definitely like to return to Huntingdon Grange.

Located 25 minute drive from centre of Christchurch just off a very busy main road. We were in The Smithy which is separate from the main house and nicely decorated inside. We thought the room was beautiful at first, but I would say, however, that there were several cobwebs on the walls and the mat in the bathroom had dirty stains on it which during the four nights we were there was not replaced or cleaned.

Breakfasts were very good - full cooked breakfast with juice, cereals, fruit and toast.

We had booked to go on the Tranzalpine train to Arthurs Pass which left Christchurch Station at 8.30 am and asked Gaye if we could have a continental breakfast at 6.45 am, but were informed 7 am is the earliest she could provide this as she has to get up very early in the morning and she gets tired. There were other guests who were doing the same trip and were also told the same thing. We were told there would not be much traffic at that time of the morning, which was not true as it was extremely busy with rush hour traffic and both us and the other family had to break our necks to get to the station on time.

When we arrived Gaye informed us that there was a laundry room and we were welcome to use it. I did used the washing machine twice and the tumble dryer once. When I came to pay the bill Gaye added on $30 dollars for the use of the laundry room, therefore be warned before using the washing machine ask for charges first. After querying the amount Gaye refunded 15$ to my credit card.

After the long flight from the UK we were delighted to see Lindsay at Christchurch Airport waiting to take us off on the first leg of our New Zealand adventure. Huntingdon Grange is a tranquil location just a short drive from the city. Gaye and Lindsay are exceptional hosts and our stay in The Smithy was a wonderful experience. Huntingdon Grange offers terrific value and comfort with a hearty breakfast, a swimming pool and a relaxed and friendly ambience. Our 3 night stay was the perfect start to an outstanding holiday.

We arrived early and jet lagged to a very warm welcome from Gaye. Our room was lovely and Gaye's breakfast was excellent and one of the best we sampled in New Zealand. The gardens are delightful and gives the whole place an air of peace and tranquility.
It is an excellent place to begin a trip around South Island although i would recommend a car as taxis are really expensive and no public transport runs out as far as Huntingdon Grange.

We recently spent two nights at Huntingdon Grange, and what a wonderful place it is- so warm and welcoming and homely, yet luxurious in it's decor. The rooms are beautiful, and the lounge and conservatory are the perfect place to relax after travelling, stacked with books and magazines, and with a lovely outlook over the garden and pool. We really enjoyed exploring the farm, looking at the horses and alpacas ( Mad Max is hilarious!) and sheep, and swimming in the pool. Huntingdon Grange would be perfect for a couple wanting peace and quiet, or for those who want to experience a taste of farm life. Gaye and Lindsay are so hospitable, and Gaye's breakfasts were delicious. Huntingdon Grange is also surprisingly convenient to the airport, though you feel you are a million miles away. Highly recommended, and one of the highlights of our NZ visit!

The house is so closed to Christchurch airport. The hosts (Ann & Lindsay Johnson) are very kind and service minded. They love the house and decorate the house very tiny and delicately. We can feel the warmth out of it.

Every rooms are cute including dining room, living room, bathroom, and bedrooms. The price is also so cheap and it's more than worth to pay and stay here. I am so pleased to recommend others about this place and would like to come again. Thanks!

Huntingdon grange is an elegent home which is surrounded by beautiful garden and a working farm. It is extremely comfortable and warm place to stay because of the hospitality of Gaye. She is a cheerful person who is sincere in wanting to make the stay of all her guests feel at home and as comfortable as possible. Her breakfast is great and there are small muffins to greet you each evening . She will also thougthfully turn on the heater to warm up the rooms in cold evening while we were out.

In the morning, you wake up to in the morning to birds chirping and be sure to take a walk around the beautiful garden and farm where you will meet horses, sheep and even alpacas. There is a black alpaca called Mad Max beacuse he is mad !. I heard from Gaye that she also has a vegetable plot which I missed visiting. Be sure to also play with Kova the dog who has fur like that of a sheep ! If you are into playing tennis there is even a lawn tennis court in the garden. The decor in the house is very well done and I especially like the books in the living room which brought back memories of my childhood.

This B&B is about half an hour drive away from downtown Christchurch but it is only 10 minutes from Hornby mall where there are lots of eating shopping places and even a factory outlet.

This is one best B&B I have stayed in and I would certainly like to return to if I go back to Christchurch.
