Arrived in Chch for 2 nights to watch Pearl Jam concert(they were great by the way!). Checked into Ibis with no fuss. Room was clean, very comfortable and although small, had everything we needed. The best thing about the Ibis is its so close to town...well it's in town actually. So we travelled by bus to wherever we wanted to go which was both cheap and interesting.
Staff were all very polite and pleasant and couldn't have been more helpfull. Even down to holding our bags for the day as we didn't fly out until 7pm at night. The 11am checkout was nice too so we could have a lie-in after the long night.
If you're just after a comfy bed without all the extra drama, I'd certainly reccommend the Ibis.

Right at the heart of Christchurch - Cathedral Square is literally a minute away (through a small walkway to the left of the hotel) and other attractions like the Avon River, Arts Centre and Art Gallery are just a short walk way too.

We stayed for a weekend and would definitely stay again - rooms are simple but clean and the location was just perfect. Our room looked out across to the mountains. Staff were very friendly too.

If you are a light sleeper you may want to arrange for a room on the upper levels - because the Ibis is so central (and there are several bars in the street below) it can get a little noisy. Our room was on level 4 - but we are sound sleepers so the noise did not bother us. But if you are a light sleeper you probably want to stay higher up.

We did notice that the street got a little rowdy at 2 or 3am on a Saturday as all the bars closed - there were many rather drunk teenagers staggering around. However, the Ibis felt perfectly safe. We were just glad we did not park our rental car right outside one of the bars.

There is limited parking at the hotel (at a cost) but on a weekend street parking is free from 1pm onwards (till Monday morning I think). We did not have too many problems finding free car parks a few streets away from the Ibis.

There is a great breakfast place down the street (though you either have to book or pretty much be there at 7am - good food and very popular with the locals too). Also liked the bookshop Scorpio Books, also in Hereford Street.

Location
Situated a walkway away from the Visitor's Centre, Cathedral Square...you're in the heart of town. I didn't drive and didn't have to worry about parking, but there are shuttles and busses all the time from the airport...at around NZD5. Safe, central location.

The room
I stayed in room 608 for three nights - nice views of the mountains. The room was huge, more modern than one of the hotels I stayed in at Auckland, and is all you need. There is too much to do in Christchurch and the surrounding area to spend all your time inside you're room. However, if you do so wish to chill out in your room...the outside world is easily shut out with the blinds (not flimsy pieces of scrap, but sturdy UV blocking strength material!). No bath, just a shower...but what more do you need to keep clean? Very comfortable stay.

The staff
Housekeeping, reservations, and restaurant crews were friendly, professional, and helpful. Very much like the people in Christchurch, which is nice...an authentic experience. They were all professional without being stuffy...they had personality and I liked that.

The restaurant
Best of my NZ hotel experiences - beats the Mercures and Novotel! Nice atmosphere and menu selection. However, there are so many places to eat in town...but if you're after convenience and quality, you can't go much further than the restaurant.

Would I stay there again?
Absolutely!

Any improvements?
The only suggestion I could made, and I'm not sure if it was just a quirk for my stay - a door hanger that says, 'shh, I'm sleeping' or something like that. That way, you can oversleep with confidence...which will happen, because you'll have so much fun one day and want to sleep in the next.

We stayed in this hotel for two nights and the locaion's superb. Right next to the Cathedral Square, tram stop, bus pick-up for International Antartic Centre etc. The hotel itself doesn't have a lot of car park, so the friendly staff guided us to a nearby parking lot. Was a bit nervous initially, but we were givien the right directions and good help. The room was neat and clean, decently well appointed. We got a horrible view, though, of a nearby building. Can't recall the room numer though. There's a convenience store right opposite and it has some food stuff. The hotel staff even helped us heat some food. The breakfast on first floor is pretty decent too,

paid 90 NZD for two nights (45 per night) including all taxes/fees. Location is great, didn't try the breakfast as there is plenty in the area. Sheets weren't changed during the two days and had some stains on them. Bathroom was clean but small. For two nights its fine as i usually spend most of my time outside the hotel rooms i stay in.
