“economical comfort in the heart of the city”
Reviewed October 31, 2008

Like many of the other reviewers here, we arrived into Christchurch early in the morning after our international flight. Despite it being early, the reception of the Ibis allowed us to check in immediately upon arrival. Also, when we discovered we had forgotten the print outs of our hut passes, they gladly helped us print new ones. They were very accommodating, kind and efficient.

The lobby is clean, uncluttered and comfortable with pay internet access available. The room was also comfortable, but a bit small for two double beds. Had there been 4 people in the room it would have been a bit crowded, but it was plenty spacious for the two of us.

We enjoyed the location immensely, being ideally situated just around the corner from the Cathedral and the i-site and a few minutes walk to all sorts of shops, cafes and restaurants as well as the park.

After reading good reviews, we booked with the hotel website and got very reasonable rates for this comfortable and very well positioned hotel. Our first room was ok. but had very limited views and was rather cramped with both a queen and single bed. Fortunately we had booked another room for the following night for our grown up children and during a conversation with staff about being close by.... they were able to move us to a much more spacious room. We found the staff very helpful, the rooms clean and comfortable and the location excellent. We particularly enjoyed the bar with delicious pre-dinner appetisers (free) and live entertainment.

Not too much to add other than another positive vote. It was a very convenient location from which to get around the city on the tramway and / or walk to see some of the sights. Staff were helpful... although a different taxi turned up to the one I was told they always use and it cost an extra few $$ to the airport. If you get there 'green taxi' for a fixed fare of $32 or whatever they said it was, that's good value for a taxi (there are options for shuttle buses etc. around the corner near the cathedral).

Overall, served us well on our last night before a morning flight out of town.

Stayed here recently on a Saturday night. Location is just a few metres from Cathedral Square, and we found street parking right outside. The hotel is new, so everthing is in good condition. I took advice from other reviews and asked for a rear room - it was very quiet (albeit with a view of the building next door though stillample natural light). The usual Ibis layout but quite roomy with a king-size bed. Nice new LCD televison so watching the rugby was enjoyable. The guy on the front desk was the epitome of helpful and pleasant. The breakfast was typical buffet fare - unexciting but filling. For $100 this hotel was exceptional value and I will be sure to stay here again. Well done Ibis!

I stayed at the Ibis Hotel Christchurch recently while travelling on business and was surprised and pleased at the high quality of the hotel which made the $100 NZ I paid seem incredible value for money. My room had a king size bed and was quite spacious. The decor was modern and tasteful and the whole hotel seemed quite new. Buffet breakfast was included and was also of a high standard and the staff were all very pleasant and helpful. I have already been recommending this hotel to others. It was also in a very good location and within easy walking distance of many restaurants and inner city amenities. The only minor difficulty I encountered was that I had thought from the hotel website that internet access was free in all rooms and even when I realised it was paid the plans were very unclear and I ended up paying $10 for only about half an hour and had lugged my laptop the whole way whereas I would have left it at home if I had have known the cost of internet access. However, this was a very minor difficulty and my fault for not getting my info straight. I travelled with a colleague who also stayed at this hotel and we were both very impressed with the whole experience.

Having worked in a five star property in Melbourne for a number of years, my expectations were pretty high in terms of presentation, service, and cleanliness.

This was the first time I've stayed at an Ibis hotel and was most impressed with the experience.

The proximity to the centre of the city is fantastic. Cathedral Square is a two-minute walk, as is the iSite (information centre). This is particularly useful for first-time visitors to the city, which I was.

When we arrived late Saturday afternoon, the room was already ready. We were loverlooking Hereford Street and were able to see views of the mountains on the clearer mornings that we were there.

The room was exceptionally clean and still looked and felt 'new'. With the two double beds, there was still room to move, which was a pleasant surprise. The room was cozy and the framed photograph on the wall and the bamboo reed (?) blinds made the ambience quite homely.

I'm glad we didn't sacrifice on space, as we most likely would've done had we decided to stay at Hotel So (which we had considered), for the room rate was very competitive. We paid NZ$100 inc GST per night and that included breakfast for two in the hotel's cafe.

One of the Receptionists was most helpful and managed to book a last minute tour for us with minimal fuss. Two other Receptionists, however, were less than helpful; responding rudely and abrubtly towards our general enquiries.

Overall, despite the bad attitudes of the two Receptionists, the hotel stay was fantastic and I have no hesitations about recommending it. I would definitely stay at Hotel Ibis the next time I visit Christchurch.
