“Loved it”
Reviewed December 20, 2007

We loved our stay there. Due to circumstances beyond our control we arrived at midnight. I had advised Ray that we would be late and he said he would leave the room open and the key in the door. However, when we arrived Ray appeared and carried our suitcases upstairs and into our room for us. Remember it was midnight. The rooms were spotlessly clean and had a small kitchen which we made use of. The Motel is quite new and therefore everything is in good condition. We used the internet, in our room, for $3.00 per hour. This was far cheaper than any other place we stayed at in our 3 weeks in the south island. It was quite a pleasant walk downtown to the city heart.
We found Ray to be very obliging and he even drove us to the train to catch the Trans Alpine.
It is privately owned and they really know how to look after their guests. We would most certainly stay there again.

The Bealey Avenue Motel wasn't our first choice - all our first choices (gleaned from this site) were booked during this busy period in Christchurch. I stumbled upon Bealey Avenue Motel while seeking an alternate location - and I'm very happy we did. It was certainly our most budget lodging during our time in New Zealand, but the rooms were clean and well-maintained, we were a nice walk (about 10 minutes) from the downtown area and the area where you find the concentration of restaurants, and the Korean immigrant family who owns/runs this motel were very courteous and thorough and went out of their way to ensure our stay was pleasurable. This was the only place we stayed with a "laundromat" on-site. The wash cycle is NZ$2; the generous dry cycle is also NZ$2. The owner generously provides detergent in the cabinet underneath the sink - if you want softener or dryer sheets though, bring your own or pick up something at one of the many convenience stores. We were in Room 2 - complete with mini-kitchen. We used the fridge for breakfast items we picked up at the convenience store down the street but didn't use the stove, microwave or toaster. Two irons/ironing boards provided in the laundry room. Internet access provided for a nominal charge. Room 1 is right next to the laundry room - could perhaps mean some late-night washing machine/dryer noise if your jetlagged neighbors (like me) are doing laundry at odd hours. A relatively new place, it seems to be a popular style for "motels" around Christchurch - we noticed quite a few of a similar style.
