“the only place to stay in chch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2007

My husband and I had a two week old baby when we chose to stay at 40 Thornycroft Street. It is no mean feat travelling with a young baby and I found the owner Vivienne Turner to be extremely accomodating. She even provided a cot and a pram for our use! I would recommend this accomodation to everyone including young families with both younger and older children. A walk around the surrounding streets showed what an excellent place it is for a family holiday. A quiet culdesac - there is a park complete with swings and slides across the road, a large grassy area and a tennis court. A children's library is nearby and it is all easily accessed without the fear of traffic. In fact there is very little traffic in the area, and so was quite a peaceful holiday (as much as can be expected with a young baby). There are supermarkets and restaurants only a short walking distance away. The accomodation is lovely. There is a beautiful courtyard which immediately makes you feel very tranquil and relaxed. And the breakfast! What a chef, absolutely yummy. The only disappointment was having to move on to our next destination. We have stayed in many B&Bs around New Zealand and this was by far our favourite. Thanks!

We can describe Thornycroft's B&B as an awesome place, with a great breakfast, fantastic music selection and an extremely lovely owner! Need to try the lemon cake! It's heaven!
Highly recomended!

My girlfriend and I stayed at 40 Thornycroft back in late February, and if you're looking for a "meet the locals" type experience, then this is for you. Viv's lovely, the BnB is more like your home than a hotel, and it's incredibly comfortable. Close to town too...

  • Liked — Sublimely comfortable bed...
  • Disliked — not the paciest internet

I stayed here with my boyfriend for 4 nights in November of this year(2006). A really lovely place - everything from the home cooked breakfasts, to the cosy bedroom and luxury bathroom. Viv is a lovely host. Truly. Cannot recommend enough.

We travelled around New Zealand for 2 weeks staying at a range of beautiful bed and breakfasts in the South Island. Though not the most expensive and luxurious, 40 Thornycroft was by far my favourite place to stay.

Viv was a wonderful host for our 3 night stay and truly made our trip to Christchurch a memorable experience. From wonderful breakfasts to excellent advice on sightseeing, Viv was a gracious host. Her home is lovely and our bedroom with ensuite was supremely comfortable. In fact there were many times that my girfriend and I felt that we were staying at a friend's house rather than just another hotel or B&B.

This is a rare but welcome feeling when travelling. If you are looking for fancy amenities then book yourself into a 5 star hotel. If you want small, intimate and memorable, then check this place out. I promise you won't be disappointed.
