Jailhouse Accommodation

Me and my girlfriend stayed att this place for two nights, the booking was made in advance. We stayed in a privateroom and the price was 80$ per night. The staff was average, not bad and not the best. On the downside is that you can't get private shower and toilet, share only... On the other hand everything was clean with exeption from the mens toilet.

+
Cool atmosphere
Quiet (loud boulding but signs with quietarea made it good)
Clean and fresh
Free parking
Calm area

-
No private shower or toilet
Mens toilet not so fresh
Expensive and slow wi-fi.

We can absolutley recommend the jailhouse acommadation.

Sorry for my bad english, not my native languange.

Stayed in a castle? Done that. An art deco building? Check. Now what about a prison? It's nowhere as bad as it may seem.

+ It's not often that you get to stay in a historic building, and this neo-Gothic beauty isn't a let-down in the charm stakes. They keep the theme going throughout and preserved a couple of cells, but it doesn't get corny or uncomfortable. The staff do a great job of cleaning the place in the mornings.

+ It's close to several good cafes like Addington Co-op, North & South, New York Deli and Mosaic, a drycleaners and convenience stores, not to mention the railway station and the bus stop.

+ Even in the dorms the beds are made. That's a first for me.

+ The managers and WWOOFers know heaps and are really helpful.

- Being in a nice neighbourhood comes with a price premium, and the big supermarkets and city centre are some distance away.

- Wifi isn't free, although the nearby BK and Cargo Bar have it.

- The lockers are too small for backpacks, and this seems to be an issue everywhere I go in this country.

Room Tip: No lifts here (what do else you expect from a prison?), be prepared to climb with your luggage if yo...

First the good things, the building is really cool, it is very clean and the facilities are okay. The place had loads of potential but was ruined for us by poor service from the staff. let me explain...

We arrived about 9 pm having booked three nights in a private room. They left directions to the room along with a key and we had a good first night. We slept late and were woken around ten by housekeeping wanting to clean the room. We explained we weren't checking out and they left. They then came back and told us we had to move rooms straight away and then move again the next day as we had been booked into different classes of room for each night. We had booked a twin room for three nights but apparently their booking system doesn't take into account that there are at least two different kinds of twin room which is pretty poor and I don't think we are the only people to have had problems as a result of it.

The main reason I have marked this hostel down though is the receptionist with the short brown hair who came and said we had to move. Since it was a surprise to us I asked if we could have an hour to pack as our bags had been exploded everywhere the night before and was told no. Was our other room ready? No. They could have got our room ready while we packed but this basic level of customer service escaped her and it was a cleaner (who was excellent) who suggested it. To be fair to them the manager then let us stay in the second room without moving again but did try to charge us extra for it (she let it go when I complained). I think the customer service was very poor.

Also, ninety bucks for a double? That's a lot more than we spent in two months of travelling in NZ and I don't think we got any more than we did in other, much cheaper places. They know people are going to stay regardless so charge what they like.

Feedback to the hotel? Sort out your booking system and train your receptionists that customer service is more important than cleaning the rooms as quickly as possible.

So, yeah, if you want to stay here you will probably have a great time but I found the staff to be lacking which affected my stay and I wouldn't stay there again.

Room Tip: Make sure you know where you are going to be staying each night. You don't want to pay for a ro...

I had reservations at staying at a hostel, especially with the stereotypical view that they're hostels are run down, and full of dirty backpackers. But Jailhouse was the complete opposite! It was also an interesting experience seeing the hostel come to life later in the night when a horde of teens returned from their One Direction concert just down the road. They were polite and kept quite though ;)

Good points:
* I noticed it was cleaned once or twice a day (even the showers)
* The rooms were tidy, bedsheets and blankets too
* Very friendly and helpful staff
* Located on main road, near food and a 20min walk from an area full of camping/hiking stores

Not-so-good points
* Can't think of anything!

Good clean hostel with a nice friendly staff. Only negative was a terrible supply of electrical outlets in the rooms which is a pain in the butt. It kind of looked like they may be working on fixing that though. All in all a solid hostel to stay in. Cool concept. I'd recommend.

It's a cool experience. Lodging in Addington prison. Rooms are clean and former prison cells! It's a quirky experience no doubt...

Nothing to fault really. A double room ran us 60 euros. Maybe a bit steep? But I guess it would be 10 extra to see the inside of a prison anyway ;)

Stayed here with my husband for 1 night. Our flight didn't get into Christchurch until midnight, but there was no problem checking in late - hostel simply provided us with a front door code and left our room key on the desk.
We always look for places to stay that are more interesting / unusual and so this was perfect. Clean room & bathrooms. Fairly easy walk into the centre. Only negative was the bed was way too soft for us!
