Jailhouse was definitely a unique experience, unlike any other hostel I've stayed in. I stayed in a private room with a bunk (last room available!) and I still found it quite tight. Beds were comfortable so that was a major plus. I didn't like that there are no ensuite bathrooms in any of the rooms however, even with a private for the amount you are paying. Service was good and very helpful, however it would have been nice to have an additional staff member present as the man there had to walk each person to their room as they checked in. It was also quite a bit away from anything of interest although I was only in need of a bed for the night, so it worked.

I've stayed in other converted jail hostels but I think this one keeps it character whilst still being a hostel the best. The kitchen is great - always clean, sharp knives, free tin foil and cling film, loads of utensils including scales and an oven.

The staff are friendly and helpful. The cinema and tv room ate great and the pool table is really cool up in the attic area. Our room had a table and chairs in it and a toilet so you didn't need to walk to the bathroom in the night.

It's very chilled and quiet here - not a party place. It's a fair walk to town - 10-15 mins (this is still a good distance as CBD hostels were destroyed in the earthquake) and the PAC n save.

Personally, I'd have preferred global gossip Internet providers as they seem more common in NZ and I'd bought a week's worth!

I'd recommend a stay here, I paid $31 for my dorm, a few dollars more than nose but after queenstown it had everything I needed to recuperate!

I used this hostel as a base for travelling in the south island over two weeks. I ended up staying in a twin private room, double room and dorm room. The private rooms are good, small and basic however no ensuite included in the price, which was expensive.

The hostel is very quiet, clean and comfortable with good facilities including a large kitchen plus lots of areas to sit and relax. The staff are friendly and very helpful.

The location is good, the building is set off the main road and located within walking distance (good 30mins) to the city centre. A bus stop is located out on the main road about 50m from the hostel. A really good cafe, jailhouse / addington coffee co-op is located 5 mins walk from the hostel. This cafe has a great atmosphere, good food and coffee.

What was nice was the age range of guests, from early 20's to over 60's and everyone just seemed to fit in.

I enjoyed my stay at the jailhouse, its great that the building has been reused and converted into accommodation. It is expensive to stay here and then you find that wifi is an extra cost...$3 per hour. I don't understand why wifi isn't provided free to guests (just add a surcharge to the room rate!!).

I would recommend this hostel, great location and ambience.

What you see is what you get! An original! We were inmates and it was really interesting seeing how the jail once was, and even living it a little bit at the same time. Sleeping in a jail cell was very unique. The facilities are ideal, decent size kitchen, places to sit and eat, games room, cinema/television room. Couldn't of expected anything more. Would definitely recommend it to friends.

Stayed for a few days and really enjoyed my stay. The dorms were clean and comfortable but the hostel(converted from a jail) was a bit smaller and the doors squeaks a bit too much. Service rendered is phenomenal. (They have more than one crew around most of the time so it's easier to ask questions while most of the other hostels in new zealand only has one person at the reception at a time
