Jailhouse Accommodation

Stayed here for one night and was certainly a memorable experience. Clean and tidy, big kitchens. Only thing is that it perhaps lacked a bit of heart...people weren't overly friendly, didn't seem that interested in meeting other travellers. Would however recommend it for the experience alone.

Stopped for just one night. The building is unique and credit to the owners for keeping the original style of the building. It still looks like a prison (but nice). Rooms are very clean if a little bit small and toilets and showers were also clean. Staff were friendly and the info provided on check in was good. Only hostel I have stayed in where you are actually taken to your room ! A couple of the 'cells' have been left as cells for guests to view and lots of history both on display and in reference material around the hostel. My room was very quiet during the night, but I guess you should expect that with the thick walls on a jail ! The only drawback was the price of the wifi - $3.00 per hour (cheaper if you use it for longer), but no 12 or 24hr offer which is common in other NZ hostels.

Things I loved about this place:
- Its quirkiness as it was a former jailhouse and full of history. They have some untouched rooms on display and it was a treat roaming around the building and discovering them.
- The showers, room, and toilets were really clean which is the most important thing for me.
- They offer free shuttle to the train station which really was a big convenience for us.
- The common area in the middle is very comfortable for reading, dining, just hanging out making it more than just a bed to sleep at night.

We stayed in a double room. The room was basic but the bed was very comfortable and I would like to say that I slept very soundly throughout my stay.. except during the first night, the people staying at the room next to ours kept talking, laughing very loudly and slamming doors all throughout the night.

The walls here are not soundproofed and you can almost hear the conversation of the room next to you. The hostel does enforce a quiet time from 9pm-8am but I guess these guys didn't see the signs all over the place.. which was very irritating but I guess inconsiderate guests are something that the hostel can't control.

Location-wise, this hostel is located in Addington.. there are a lot of eating places in the area but it is a good 20 - 30 min walk to central Chch. If you don't want to walk, you can take the bus or rent a bicycle.

Overall, our stay here was a good experience and we would return to Jailhouse if we are back in Christchurch again.

As everyone else said this hostel is very clean, all the rooms, toilets and kitchen are very clean. I love about the kitchen because they got all the equipments you need, and salt, pepper and other species. The rooms are very clean but a bit small because it was a real jail and the rooms were transformed from cells. The staff are definitely very friendly and helpful, they could give you all information you need travelling in Christchurch or other cities.
The common area is a very good place for chilling out, there are games, books and outside is a little garden that you could enjoy the sky while eating or reading.
This hostel is definitely worth visiting if you come to Christchurch.

Having been a former jail built in the middle 1800's the Jailhouse is a definitely unique hostel. The rooms can be a bit small (they were jail cells after all) but not claustrophoibic and are quite comfortable (I was in a 1 - 2 person room) though in winter a bit cool (hot water bottles are available), security not an issue with 1/2 inch thick steel doors. The kitchen area is large enough for several people to cook at once, and the central hall is open and airy. The staff was friendly and very helpful to this visiting Yank. As other reviewers have stated the Jailhouse is not in Christchurch proper but in Addington, about 1/2 hour by taxi from the airport. This is not as bad as it sounds the CBD is a short walk (still closed due to the earthquake), the Avon river is also close as is the park. There are many bars and restaurants within easy walking distance to satisfy most tastes and budgets. Overall a very nice place to stay.

Lets start with the bad news this hostel isn't in Christchurch centre, oh well use public transport or walk its worth the little effort.
Good news is its not in Christchurch centre and at the moment who would want to be, this place is better for being away from the centre. Help full friendly staff make this a great unique place to stay. Quiet and clean hostel with all the security you need. Pool tables and projector screen to pass the time on the rainy days as well.
Would defiantly use again.

Room Tip: Second floor is quieter

Despite this being a converted jailhouse you are made to feel very at home.
Where the rooms are located is a quiet zone so no one can disturb you if you trying to get some sleep.
The TV and cinema room make you feel like you are sat in the comfort of your own home.
A couple of the staff are a little in-experienced when it comes to tours and excursions so make sure that you speak to the manager :-) Alternatively the i-site will sort you out.
There are some awesome bars that are close to the jailhouse, Addington Coffee Co-op, The Pedal Pusher and Pegasus.
The rooms can be slightly chilly on a night but remember, it was a jailhouse.
