“LOVE visiting the Port Hills!”
Reviewed March 9, 2013

I've been to Christchurch 5 times, and each time i go, i always make a bee line to the Port Hills. Mostly i drive the summit road and other roads that wind through it although i have walked the tracks from Opawa to the summit. But there are lots of walkers, runners, and cyclists who use the hills at all hours of the day, so make sure you keep this in mind if driving the hills. If you are walking them solo, you will feel quite safe, as you are bound to pass many people walking or running on your journey.

I just love the 'hills' as they offer stunning views over Christchurch and the surrounding areas including Sumner, the Lyttleton port, Governor's Bay and even on a clear day over to Akaroa. It is well worth the visit to the hills. Be cautioned though that the road up is narrow and winding and for the most part single lane, with no guard rails. On the top of the summit road, it is not uncommon to come across military vehicles as they sometimes use some of the hills for training purposes, so pull over and allow them to pass you safely rather than trying to 'bulldoze' your way past at same time.

Post the quake keep an eye out for falling debris, rocks etc.

If tramping through the hills, don't be stressed by the thought of snakes in the long grass- there are no snakes in New Zealand, so quite safe.

Enjoy the hills- don't forget to take a water bottle if walking and your camera!! You will get some stunning pics!!

“Run the port hills”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

Plenty of great trails on the hills above Christchurch city. Not crowded and great views over the city, the Pacific in the East and all the way West to the Southern Alps. Good for walking or running.

“A must visit!”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

The Port Hills in Christchurch are a must visit location if you're ever in town. The walks through Victoria Park are varied and well signposted so you can assess which you would like to tackle. I particularly love walking up past the sign of the kiwi to see the view over Lyttleton. If you keep going up to the sign of Bellbird you can take shelter in the small hutt, make a fire, check out the views over southern Christchurch and listen to the bellbirds - simply magical.
