We were looking for a nice place to have dinner before leaving Christchurch and stumbled upon the Swiss Bistro. The menu looked exciting so we went in. We were not even greeted with a "hello". The owner asked us if we had read the menu outside - that was his greeting. We had about an hour to go before we had to leave for the airport so we attempted to tell him as such. He told us that "if you are in a rush, go to the Chinese takeaway next door, don't talk to me". Well, that was the height of rudeness and we walked out. Apparently this restaurant's owner is filthy rich because the restaurant was empty. We were the only occupied table. So we didn't think that asking to be fed within an hour was unreasonable. Obviously, owner doesn't need the business. Not recommended.

Arrived at 7.30pm on our last night in NZ, looking forward to some nice Swiss food in the recently repaired Cathedral Junction in Christchurch. We were not allowed to sit down until we agreed that we had read the menu outside (a bit strange already). Once we were sat - at a bench seat rather than the more comfortable tables available, the owner yelled from the kitchen to the waitress to 'turn the sign over to closed'. Slightly concerned at this point to notice that the chef was wearing a pair of dirty jeans and a tshirt - no whites to be seen, perhaps this is OK in NZ? Then the same chap came out to take payment from a customer, obviously not allowing his waitress to do this. In plain view of us, then walked back into the kitchen and carried on preparing food (still no whites), without washing his hands. We had by this time ordered our food and wine so perservered with the experience. When the wine arrived we asked for a wine cooler to keep the bottle cold. None were available, we said OK. The waitress went to the kitchen and told the chef / owner, heard him start shouting that we didn't have to stay, he then came out to us and demanded to know if we had asked for a wine cooler. We said yes, but it was OK that there wasn't one, to which he responded with 'you can leave you know'. At this point we decided that this was probably our best course of action. Hope he doesn't poison anyone soon, think we were lucky to make our escape and had a lovely meal elsewhere nearby so it didn't spoil our last impressions of New Zealand or Christchurch

Popped in for a coffee with a view to eating. We had just set our foot in the door when we were literally chased out of the place by a rude asian lady despite lots of free tables. Business must be good if they can chase people away.

We can understand some of the other comments but it's a small kitchen with just the owner doing the cooking - so they restrict the number of dinners to the amount they feel they can cope with and several groups were turned away the evening we dined.
However we were lucky enough to be allowed in and the food was excellent, real authentic Swiss cuisine, carefully presented. The owner and waitress were very friendly and chatty with us. No denying it's pretty eccentric, but we really enjoyed our meal there

Please avoid if at all possible. I tried to eat at this restaurant on a weekday afternoon recently. Many tables were available at this time. Before I could order, the owner approached my table and aggressively ordered me out of the restaurant because he did not allow "single" customers to read in his establishment (!) I find this public harassment of and discrimination against solo diners who want quietly to read very strange. This was an informal open-air bistro in a prime tourist spot, btw -- not an exclusive, high-end restaurant or private club. Please try to avoid, especially if you are a tourist or businessperson traveling solo.
