We were travelling around the South Island with 2 other families in January 2014 and stayed here for a few days. We all loved the place in every aspect. Architecture, comfort, close to most sites, and above all the friendliest hosts you can find on the planet.

The husband and wife team who run the Manor are simply delightful, have a wicked sense of fun and humour and came over to our living room in the main house one afternoon to share wine and cheese with us.

Nothing was trouble for them and if we wanted anything they were so accommodating and obliging. This is one of the best places in town if not NZ.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night before leaving New Zealand. After reading the reviews, we opted to stay in the Manor itself, which I think was a great decision. The house had an old-fashioned feel to it, and our room was very comfortable. They even give you food for breakfast for your kitchenette! My only regret is not arriving earlier and getting to take advantage of all of the amenities like the balcony!

Room Tip: Book in the manor itself!

We started our recent trip to New Zealand in Christchurch and stayed for 3 nights at the Merivale Manor, having a lovely double room in the main house. It was very comfortable, well furnished and a good start to our travels. Our arrival late at night went as smooth as clockwork. The balcony adjacent to our room was handy for relaxing and for an evening meal. The hosts were friendly and helpful. The motel is well situated for buses, to walk into the city centre (so sad to see it as it currently is after the earthquake) and to visit local shops and restaurants. We would certainly stay here again if visiting Christchurch.

Room Tip: Being in the main house is preferable

We stayed two nights here in a one bedroom apartment on the top floor of the main building. The apartment was lovely with nice furniture and fixtures, yet maintaining its old charm from a bygone era. We enjoyed walking from here to the merivale shops for dinner and we also walked into the cbd. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. I made use do the complimentary guest laundry. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony in the morning having our breakfast. We would definitely stay here again.

The Merivale Manor is a charming hotel in the Merivale area, north of the city center. We had the ground level room in the back of the manor (#211) and found it to be very comfortable and nicely furnished. It consisted of a main sitting room with a kitchenette, a bedroom and a bathroom. The bedroom is a little cramped (watch your head that you don't hit the shelf in the corner in the dark!). I think this room would be better with a slightly smaller bed. The bathroom was nice, but had very few places to hang towels. A couple of hooks on the back of the bathroom door and/or another towel rod on the wall would be helpful. But these are minor issues, we really enjoyed it.

Karen and Wayne, are wonderful hosts. They were friendly, helpful (and gave great restaurant recommendations!). Milk, bread and cereal is included, as is free laundry -- very nice touches. K&W cheerfully got us anything we needed, including transfer to the train station, and advice on attending the rugby game.

It is an easy walk to restaurants and to the city center, plus there is a bus stop nearby. Conveniently, the bus from the Antarctic Center at the airport picks up within a half block of Merivale Manor.

This motel is located in Merivale just north of the city centre. There is a bus stop right outside or it is about a 35 min walk into the city. 5 min walk north and there is the centre of Merivale, with a good choice of restaurants and shops and a supermarket.
Received a warm welcome from Wayne on check in who gave all the info on the local area. Also gave info for a good walking tour of the city area. On our first day we had showers in the morning when we had planned to do the walk but good old Wayne produced an umbrella from his cupboard. Thankfully it brightened and we didn't need it.
We had a room on the left hand side (not in the main house although I took a peek and these were very nice) Our room was well maintained and presented with a room for the bed, table and chairs and an easy chair. Off of this was a good sized kitchen area with 2 x hobs, microwave, toaster & kettle and all the chinaware/cutlery. Easy to eat in if you wanted especially with the supermarket just up the road.
There was a beautiful bathroom with a separate shower and the biggest spa bath I have ever had in a hotel/motel.
I cannot recommend this hotel enough. All the staff, especially Wayne, were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Rooms on right and left all ground floor and good position. House has 2 levels

We began our 2 week New Zealand trip with a night at this boutique motel - my mum and her partner have stayed here a number of times and love it, and so she booked a night for the her, my husband, baby and myself before we began our driving holiday - mum lives in NZ and so could spend a night with us.

The grounds of the Manor are lovely as is the main and surrounding buildings. The room itself was fantastic; beautifully appointed, with all creature comforts (we stayed in a studio). Hot plates, extra bedding/pillows, a really great bathroom - huge shower with excellent water pressure. The bed and pillows were really comfortable. There was plenty of room in a studio for mum's fold out bed and our baby's portacot. There was a great selection of coffee/tea/hot choc as well as some jams/honey and milk in the fridge. The laundry room is complementary - something which we've come to find is not common, so extra kudos there. All in all, an excellent night's stay, and I'd love to stay again on our next trip to NZ! Thanks.
