Merivale Manor was our first stopover on our NZ holiday. We booked a spa studio (which is not in the manor itself) for 2 nights and were pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness and coziness of the room. The rooms in the motel have been thoughtfully done and are equipped with modern kitchen appliances. The manor also has adequate parking space. The room service was pretty efficient and the lady at the reception was kind and helpful. She got our electric kettle replaced immediately when we informed her that it was not working properly.

What we really liked was the fact that the manor keeps a catalogue of useful tourist information and restaurant menus. The super market is a 10 minute walk from the manor.

A word of caution - Our studio was right next to the main road and we could hear the passing-by traffic inside the room. However, this is not a big problem since the roads are pretty much empty after dark.

All in all, we had a nice time at the manor which offered good value for money.

We stayed in a Manor room and were thoroughly impressed. The history of the house and the general cleanliness of the property made our stay quite enjoyable. Even though the rooms were all occupied we couldn't hear anyone and slept well. I'd recommend a stay here to anyone.

We booked a stay at the last minute and were delighted with the manor. Rooms in the main building are large and spacious with plenty of character to the place itself. No noise from any neighbours, despite the place being fully booked.
The owners were really friendly and helpful with suggestions for dinner. With so many places still closed due to earth quake damage, it was great to find this place still running.

We stayed for 2 nights in the manor on the second floor. It was updated, we booked the one bedroom apt. Had only a shower but was immaculate! I would stay there again for any visit to Christchurch. There were 2 Televisions, just a few channels but the same as any other hotel in the area. Very close to downtown which is still suffering from the big earthquake. It is very much worth taking the tour of the "red zone" to fully understand the devastation. Many businesses have relocated and welcome the tourists who come to the city.

Room Tip: I would stay upstairs on the second floor in the old original Manor House. All rooms have been updat...

Comfortable stay. Unfortunate that it was for only one night.
Pros: Clean room and premises. Well preserved 100+ old building. Unfortunate that the interior was slightly affected by the recent earthquakes. But that was so minor that it was easily overlooked. Quiet part of town that led to a good night's rest. Located in a pleasant part of town.
Cons: None really. As it was our first day in NZ, did not have any benchmark to compare with. But as our NZ holiday progressed, we realised that most (if not at all the accommodation we stayed at) receptions were freely offering us advice and recommendation on places to eat and do. We boiled it down to maybe the rebuilding of Christchurch (CCH) that meant lesser choices to recommend (although the lady at the recep did guide us to where there may be places to eat).

General observation: Mood of people we came across in CCH differ from those we went subsequently (Dunedin, Te Anau, Queenstown and Franz Josef). Our conversations with locals seem to point us towards the rebuilding efforts that may have contributed to the mood in CCH.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the main room are quieter. We stayed at a 3 person room (there is a sofa bed that ac...

After taking a intercity bus from Queenstown to Christchurch and having to walk 10 streets with all our luggage in tow we came to the Merivale Manor for a one night stay. My first reaction was oh, so this is the place, well its only one night. I could not have been more pleasantly surprised and wished we could have stayed there longer. From the moment we entered the office we were greeted by the staff who was extremely friendly and welcoming. They provided milk and bread and told us cereal and jams were in the room. She then walked us over to our room offering to help with our luggage and when she opened the door we were greeted with basically a modern studio apartment with great amenities.

We were able to walk to the shopping area, botanical gardens and downtown Christchurch from the Merivale. All in all a great place to stay!

Room Tip: No Pool or Gym

We stayed here for two nights. The rooms are tidy and the service helpful. A great location to explore Merivale and the CBD. There are lots of dining options within easy reach of the Merivale Manor. The staff here are more than happy to offer advice on where to visit and will help with any other requests you may have. We will be back to stay here...
