Comfortable stay. Unfortunate that it was for only one night.
Pros: Clean room and premises. Well preserved 100+ old building. Unfortunate that the interior was slightly affected by the recent earthquakes. But that was so minor that it was easily overlooked. Quiet part of town that led to a good night's rest. Located in a pleasant part of town.
Cons: None really. As it was our first day in NZ, did not have any benchmark to compare with. But as our NZ holiday progressed, we realised that most (if not at all the accommodation we stayed at) receptions were freely offering us advice and recommendation on places to eat and do. We boiled it down to maybe the rebuilding of Christchurch (CCH) that meant lesser choices to recommend (although the lady at the recep did guide us to where there may be places to eat).

General observation: Mood of people we came across in CCH differ from those we went subsequently (Dunedin, Te Anau, Queenstown and Franz Josef). Our conversations with locals seem to point us towards the rebuilding efforts that may have contributed to the mood in CCH.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the main room are quieter. We stayed at a 3 person room (there is a sofa bed that accommodated our two teenage kids).

After taking a intercity bus from Queenstown to Christchurch and having to walk 10 streets with all our luggage in tow we came to the Merivale Manor for a one night stay. My first reaction was oh, so this is the place, well its only one night. I could not have been more pleasantly surprised and wished we could have stayed there longer. From the moment we entered the office we were greeted by the staff who was extremely friendly and welcoming. They provided milk and bread and told us cereal and jams were in the room. She then walked us over to our room offering to help with our luggage and when she opened the door we were greeted with basically a modern studio apartment with great amenities.

We were able to walk to the shopping area, botanical gardens and downtown Christchurch from the Merivale. All in all a great place to stay!

Room Tip: No Pool or Gym

We stayed here for two nights. The rooms are tidy and the service helpful. A great location to explore Merivale and the CBD. There are lots of dining options within easy reach of the Merivale Manor. The staff here are more than happy to offer advice on where to visit and will help with any other requests you may have. We will be back to stay here...

Stayed 2 nights - at start & end of trip. Helpful staff arranged pick up to airport as we turned in our car at Greymouth and took train back to Christchurch. Staff mailed lost item back to us. Liked our room upstairs in the manor house. Small motel - breakfast is milk cereal, toast. Walking distance to town, but we drove. Laundry facilites available. Nearby restaurants. Convenient.

Room Tip: Spa rooms are bigger (new) We liked our room in the old home.

Couldn't have asked for more. Service was very friendly and personal, complementary milk, bread, cereals. Laundry at your disposal. Rooms were newly renovated and cleaned daily. Price was very good, especially for what you got!! Would definitely return on our way back to Christchurch. Merivale also appears to be a great suburb.

Room Tip: Ask for room furthest from the road.
