“Menu Designer Wants Shot”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2014

Chose to eat here on a Saturday lunchtime around 1pm. We wanted to eat at the Pedal Pusher restaurant next door but they were too busy. Back to Morrells ....... Who ever designed this menu and associated wine list wants shot. Although the specialty is 'meatballs' (my first ever encounter of this new trend, but I am now in my mid-forties ...... lol) the menu designer shouldn't really ignore most other menu options things. I really struggled to find something I wanted from the menu. And 50% of the Chardonnay wines by the glass were 'unavailable'. Ended up with ordering the Shepard I think it was, which was good and tasty meatballs in a rich red wine jus served to the table in a really hot pan with pea puree.

This could be a really cool place during the day with unlimitless potential. Sadly, the focus on Meatballs (...... FFS????) is a bad move. Why not do Meatballs and add to your menu awesome steaks? Or something else like fresh fish?

Doubt I would recommend unless you like Meatballs.

“I did not just see that.......”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 3, 2014 via mobile

Was going to stay , the menu intrigued me.

And before you read the rest, the service is awesome.

But....

With a view to the kitchen , saw chef , gasbagging in the phone, no gloves , wipe under nose/mouth (probably unconsciously) and then use the tongs (good) but then fingers (Eeew) to pull the dumplings out of the bowl with those same nose/mouth wiping fingers.

While watched, for the next order of the same dish, he uses the tongs all the way through plating up.

This is not a nice view, and while yes this review has potential to damage the reputation of the place if you decide to publish. It's NOT done. So, Not staying for dinner. I'll tolerate a lot and ignore what I don't see happen, the same as we all will likely want to not admit what might happen in the kitchen, but once seen not forgotten .

Sorry .....

“Enjoyable”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2014

Went in as a group of four on a busy night in Christchurch, stumbled upon this restaurant whilst walking down the street. The place was really busy, people at the bar and people eating in the restaurant. Ordered 2 steaks, went down a treat with the boys, one salmon, oh so yummy, came with a salad and walnuts. Ordered the fish and chips and this was great as well, very filling meals, after eating the garlic bread for starters. Service not bad for a busy night, they came and asked if the meals were acceptable and asked also if we needed a refill on the drinks. Nice atmosphere, all clean and tidy, enjoyable night. They could do with a better sign out the front as we were not sure if it was a bar, a restaurant or what it was, menu out the front would be good to.

“Bland, Bland, Bland”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2014

We thought we would give Morrell & Co a go, but found the meatballs very bland and dry as well, the sauces also had no flavour. We assumed that as meatballs were there speciality they would be amazing, we were all disappointed. For dessert I had the Mars bar bread and butter pudding. This was really dry and lacked flavour as well. The only redeeming feature of the night was the great singer they had.
