“Carpark Trap”
Review of New Brighton Beach

New Brighton Beach
Reviewed August 20, 2014 via mobile

Be careful if you are parking at the city council's car park. It closes at 6.30pm and I was trapped until the warden came to unlocked the barricade. Cost NZD40 to be released. Glad to share the steep release fees with another New Zealander. Paid 20 each. What a spolier.

New Brighton Beach is adversely affected by a cool Easterly breeze in the summer, so it was a joy to walk on the beach in mid-winter, without a breeze to chill us. It is a very wild, drift-wood strewn beach, which adds to the fun for the kids (and beach-comber in us all).
The Pier was more than usually crowded with fishermen and the sole Ranger was kept busy trying to restrict their behaviour. It is always entertaining for visitors to see the huge crab pots & frequent catches of dogfish etc.
We ate fish & chips on the beach (bought in the Mall) but were disappointed to find that it was pre-frozen hoki.

great beach not really a great place to swim as it is reasonably cold.
the main attraction is the pier built about 18 years ago .its a good walk and is situated on the beach in marine parade.great place just to see people fishing and catching crabs.
solid structure and very good for photo shots.
attached to the pier is a nice cafe and a library great for a relaxing time away from the normality.
well worth a visit ,need a jacket as it gets windy and maybe a beanie.
worth the visit.

Most of the year the beach and pier makes a dramatic backdrop for a photo, but tends to attract more surfers than swimmers. Those wanting a dip in the water might find Sumner a little more to their tastes. There are always plenty of people fishing out on the end of the pier, and my kids enjoyed watching them pull in crab pots and unhook fish; though trying to explain why people were drinking wine before lunch was interesting. Eating and coffee options are aplenty nearby, and the public library can offer a welcome haven if the Easterly wind is up.
