This is a time honoured spot in ChCh, well loved by kids and families and dogs. The river winds through it and it's a great place for adventuring. There are plenty of lovely picnic spots, as it's quite and extensive reserve. There's plenty of free parking and lots of options for walking, playing or generally lazing around. We've even been known to have Christmas Day picnics here.

Running between the main road and the river, if you need a semi country walk this is quite good. Great if you have a dog, with an exercise area if you need, with a dog agility bit too!

Take your dog and let him or her have the time of their lives, especially in the river. Even as a spectator you will enjoy watching them in their very own section of the river - dogs rule here.

Over the years we have regularly done the Waimairi Walkway at the Groynes.
Today was the first time we have been back since they have reopened the loop part of this walk. The track has been relocated because of the motorway. We do not think the walk is as pleasant as it used to be, but it is nice to be able to do the loop again, which was not possible while they were constructing the motorway. It took us 70 minutes.
There are other walks and activities in the Groynes too.

As a resident of Christchurch, I had forgotten how pleasant The Groynes is. Lots of well managed picnic areas with gas BBQ’s , lots of country walks , some cross crossing a river. Children’s play areas and a boating lake. All within 10 minutes of the airport.Whether you are a resident, or just visiting, this is a great , well cared for sanctuary

The Groynes not far from the Airport is a real delight and valued by locals. A park, with a lake and streams with many secretive areas and picnic areas. Good for romantic strolls to large party groups, including playing sports games. BBQs available and smaller children's play area. Nice area most of the year, to just get away into nature, have a rest or have fun as a family or larger group. Mature trees and well maintained picnic areas.

Beautiful park for a dog walk or a spot of fishing. Cycle paths and possible bridle paths make this a multi use park.

It was great to revisit an old favourite place, full of many good memories over the years and has it changed in recent times.
What with the motorway and all the adjustments to accommodate it. My initial impression was that the changes were detrimental in a number of ways as the noise does intrude into your solitude as you explore and walk around.
Even so, the Groynes is still a special place with great facilities and it is so well set up for Families and community groups and it was agonising to have the smells of great food from different ethnic groups wafting on your nose as you explore the vast space and the many separate areas - all set up so well.
I am not a dog lover but the facilities with the huge dog park are amazing there for the dogs and their owners. And it is always quite educational to see so many breeds of dogs all having a good time.
There are lovely walks to enjoy and we noticed the steel bridge has finally reopened after such a long time.
If you haven't been to the Groynes for a while, do go back and have a good look around. And get well away from the areas close to the motorway and it is much more enjoyable.
