Mona Vale is an old, established garden running alongside the river. Lots of interesting plants and corners to explore including a rose garden and a water-lily pond. There were ducklings when we last visited and it was fascinating watching the mama duck herding her 7 little ones as they dived around the water lilies. You don't need to join a tour; nice to just wander at leisure. There is a restaurant there, but looked very formal, so we didn't get anything there. Would have been nice to have somewhere to get an icecream or a smoothie as it was a warm day.

The roses in the garden were beautiful with some rarer colours to be seen. Shallow river nearby with the odd trout to be viewed.

The buildings look classic from the outside but, it didn't really matter that they were closed. The gardens are the real attraction. The smooth, flowing river, the ducks and ducklings swimming in circles, the lazy willow trees drooping over the water alongside lush green lawns surrounded by bright flowers and towering bushes surrounding tall trees.
Even just 30 minutes to amble through the gardens is well worth it. You'll need more if you want to explore every lawn and garden. The houses across the river must surely be some of the most expensive and luxurious in the city, a treat to glimpse their lavish lifestyle, open to the river.

We visited here for optional lunch and to tour the gardens as part of the Grand Tour itinerary. An hour 15 had been allocated for this visit so by the time we got into the restaurant and ordered and then waited over half an hour for it to come, we were not left with much time to see the gardens which were very pleasant. The food when it arrived was pretty ordinary as was the included glass of wine. Would not recommend this as an eating stop.

What a discovery this little place was. Totally recommend this on your journey to Christchurch. If you want a slower day of sightseeing then Mona Vale is the place. You can pop into the cafe after your leisurely stroll for a high tea.
