Wow. Take the road back over the Port Hills to Christchurch - it is well worth the views and the bonus being able to gaze back over the Canterbury Plains all the way to the Southern Alps.

Corsair Bay will always be my pick if we are to go to a beach. It's a beautiful pocket beach behind the Port Hills. There is a raft you can swim to and there is a grass area where you can have a picnic and enjoy the sun. The beach is shelly and quite small. There is a small playground by the car park with a big slide which is always fun too.

I was taken to Corsair Bay as a child and have fond memories. These days it's better than ever. So close to the city, with decent parking and good toilet/changing facilities you will have a nice beach experience on a hot day. There's even a pirate ship playground that's popular with kids. It's small and compact - rather English in style for a beach. They have a raft you can swim to and people of all ages can enjoy the water, which has gentle waves. Be sure to bring everything with you as there is no shop. Watch you gear too as the crowd is mixed.

This is where you will find the locals. A wonderful location to chill out and relax without all of the people.

Once daylight saving ends, Christchurch locals start to think of indoor activities, but surprisingly, on the first day of "standard time", a warm, almost summery day, had dozens of people out on the beaches. Both Cass & Corsair Bay are ideal for families & dogs. The walking track between the two beaches is a pleasant way to spend a morning. Both are accessible by public transport & have toilets.
