A piece of the future in a place devastated by the past. A growing group of shops set up in 20 & 40ft containers. Only complaint is they were the high end shops but I supose thats normal for city shops anyway.

The colour and vibrancy of this location is a really nice focal point for a city that has a massive rebuilding task ahead of it.

A good variety of shops that all do a great job of presenting themselves, as well as some very nice food options.

The layout of the shipping containers meant that on the day I visited, you got to spend lots of time in the sun and really enjoy the shopping experience.

Thank heags

Creative, civic thinking at it's best, a portion of Cashel Street reopened to the public in 2011 after post-quake chaos and loss of life. Ballentynes, probably the city's most loved department store, has stood it's ground in the CBD and revamped and reopened. The pop-up mall is an innovative use of shipping containers that have been fitted and decorated to house some of the city's great old stores: Johnson's Groceries, Scorpio Books to name two. Parking is free for two hours (access Lichfield Street). Great for a stroll in the sun, a nice coffee and lunch, and close to the Avon River. Also good to get an idea of the changes that have been happening in the city, and an sense of what's been demolished and what's being rebuilt. Regular bus routes from all round city go near pop-up mall as the new bus exchange is in Tuam/Lichfield Street.

From the disasterous state that Cashel Mall was following the Earthquake of February 22 2011, the area has now been bought alive again with the addition of the pop up mall alongside everyones favourite store Ballantynes. Great food options are available (Demetris souvalakis I can recommend), good coffee (Crafted coffee) and a range of shops to have a poke through . Also good vantage points to see some of the rest or our poor shattered city (or what is left of if) It would be great to see a wider range of shops appear and not all so "top end". Also the monopolisation of parking areas by Wilsons car parks needs to be addressed - more free parking is needed to further attract people back into the area

The 'pop u mall' is quite an interesting concept and worth a look at least once. The shops there are interesting- we recommend having a coffee break upstairs in the cafe- its not often you can sit in a shipping container looking down on the street!
