Description: C1 Espresso is an iconic Christchurch café located in the central city. We reopened in the old High Street Post Office after our original premises, established in 1996, were destroyed in the Canterbury earthquakes. We are renowned for our pioneering espresso, big breakfasts, and vibrant atmosphere. We're open from 7am to 10pm, 7 days a week. C1 proudly sources and produces many of its own products in a green and sustainable way. We're a creative team, and you'll notice that we do things a bit differently. At the heart of our café is our passion for quality. It’s hard to explain in a few words what C1 is all about. So feel free look over our reviews, good and bad, and get to know us better. And then why don’t you drop into our premises on the corner of Tuam and High Streets to experience C1 for yourself. Order a set of sliders, delivered to your table through our pneumatic tubes. Try a Colombian cold drip or freshly squeezed orange juice on a hot summers day, or grab a coffee made to perfection by one of our talented baristas. Established 1996. Re-established 2012.

We walked for miles through the devastation & were greatly relieved to find a place to sit and eat, especially my 12 year old son. Loved the atmosphere & decor, a real treat. Found the food tasted really good but the serving size was poor and the plates a bit spartan - when you pay $17 for fritters you'd expect at least a small salad side. Popped back a second time for afternoon tea when returning dvds to the fabulous dvd shop next door. This time had excellent caramel slice & mini-banoffee pie. Both excellent - would recommend more for a snack than for a meal as seems this is better value for money.

Recently I visited C1 to enjoy a coffee. Having placed my order, I advised staff that I would be sitting outside, but in the meantime, enquired as to the whereabouts of the toilets. As I have had more than several orthopaedic operations on both my legs, I frequently choose to use Disabled Toilets, namely because the toilet itself is generally higher. At the time of using the Disabled toilet, I noted there was no soap whatsoever with which to wash one's hands. I discreetly advised staff at the counter of this on my way outside to await my coffee. To say I was dumbfounded at the staff' member’s response is an understatement which was "oh, just use the other toilet". Evidently because I was upright on both legs, this particular staff member had obviously determined that I could walk to another toilet! I took her to task on this matter saying that did she expect a person in a wheelchair (if that was the case) to negotiate their chair into a wheelchair inaccessible toilet to obtain soap which I would think, under OSH Regulations, is a fundamental requirement in all toilets. The staff' member’s response was to respond in an offhand manner "we are just told what to say". This attitude highlighted an absolute disregard for the welfare of future customers. What further interaction followed has ensured that I will consider very carefully before patronising this restaurant again. On receipt of my coffee outside, I returned it to the counter myself because it was cold, milky and not a very nice coffee at all. As I approached the counter, the same staff member put their hand in the till with money at the ready to give back to me before I had had an opportunity to advise that the coffee was cold and could I have another. Dumbfounded again at this attitude, I asked if a fresh coffee was not to be offered and the response was...."Oh well, you look as though you don't want to be here anyway". What appalling service and guaranteed to ensure non return of customers. --

C1 is a much appreciated cafe in the heart of the most damaged part of the inner city - a great location for disaster tourists to take a break while they are exploring our broken down inner city. The coffee is great and there's also a generous variety of cabinet food. However, the custom of serving tea and hot chocolates in glassware doesnt go down so well. One of my companions did not enjoy her pot of tea with a class to drink out of - it's not quite like having tea out of a Russian samovar. My hot chocolate was not only luke warm but the most insipid hot chocolate I have ever drunk. My only other complaint, which is consistent with other visits, is that the cafe, which is generally packed with customers, insists on playing extremely loud grungy music. It would be great if the management recognised that sometimes people want to be able to hear the other guests at their table, and also that there is actually quite an eclectic range of customers in the cafe, some of whom might like some more mellow music from time to time.
