Owner description: Quake City tells stories of heroism, hope and loss from the Canterbury earthquakes. This special exhibition from Canterbury Museum explains the science and the phenomenon of liquefaction – when the shaking liquefied the ground and it bubbled up burying street and sinking buildings. Quake City charts the aftermaths of the September 2010 and 22 February 2011 earthquakes and the extraordinary response of the emergency services, international rescue teams, the thousands of volunteers who pitched in to help – construction workers, the Student Volunteer Army, the Farmy Army – and the incredible resilience of Canterbury’s communities. Exhibition includes some of the objects which have defined the Canterbury earthquakes including the spire of ChristChurch Cathedral and the railway station clocks which stopped at 12.51 pm on 22 February 2011. The rebuild section of the exhibition brings the visitor up to date with progress in regenerating the city and the recovery projects underway.

Spent an afternoon in the exhibit which gives a great overview of the impact of the 3 earthquakes 2010 and 2011 that led to the devastation in the city. Interesting and touching personal accounts of the day are shown in a well produced video.

Even three years after the last big quake, Christchurch is still picking itself back up. This simple museum helps you to understand a little bit better what they have gone through. Be sure to watch the video interviews of people telling their stories. Just great

Well worth spending a couple of hours at Quake City. Lots of imformation about the 2 earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, and about earthquakes in general. Some very moving stories together with photographs and videos of the event.

Having been in Christchurch city just before the earthquake we went back to have a look at was once our second favourite city (after Brisbane). It was the saddest sight we have ever seen. We were there on a Wednesday morning and the place was so quite it was eerie. You stand in the middle of the city square and you can see the mountains around you because the buildings are gone. The hotel we had stayed at is no longer there. It feels like you would imagine a war zone would feel.
However, on a happier note some of the businesses have moved to the suburbs and what were once low socio-economic areas are now becoming bustling business centres. The people we spoke to are very optimistic about the future to this wonderful city - we wish them all the very best for the future and look forward to returning in a few years to see what has been achieved.
