Owner description: Quake City tells stories of heroism, hope and loss from the Canterbury earthquakes. This special exhibition from Canterbury Museum explains the science and the phenomenon of liquefaction – when the shaking liquefied the ground and it bubbled up burying street and sinking buildings. Quake City charts the aftermaths of the September 2010 and 22 February 2011 earthquakes and the extraordinary response of the emergency services, international rescue teams, the thousands of volunteers who pitched in to help – construction workers, the Student Volunteer Army, the Farmy Army – and the incredible resilience of Canterbury’s communities. Exhibition includes some of the objects which have defined the Canterbury earthquakes including the spire of ChristChurch Cathedral and the railway station clocks which stopped at 12.51 pm on 22 February 2011. The rebuild section of the exhibition brings the visitor up to date with progress in regenerating the city and the recovery projects underway.

This is a must see if visiting Christchurch , as it gives you an idea how terrible the two earthquakes where that destroyed so much of the once most beautiful city . Give yourself a little time as there is much to ponder on . The kiwis are such an amazing people and this really gives an insight to them as a great nation.

Take some time out to experience this...listen to the stories and watch the videos...the one I watched over and over is from the security camera that captures the seen of the quake and a building being damaged and out of the dust etc comes a guy who avoids being hit by falling masonry etc...

Good explanation of the effects. Good video showing how quick the destruction was. Helps to make you understand what Cantabrians have been through.

It was a great idea to put a museum of sorts in Christchurch. It really helps those of us fortunate enough not to have experienced an earthquake understand how scary they are. My friend and I were lucky enough to be guided by local friends who also shared their experiences with us.
