We visited mid-evening on our first night at the suggestion of our hosts. Despite the late hour we were welcomed warmly and not made to fell we might be an imposition. Menu is varied and all items, including fish dishes were very fresh. Salads interesting and not tired despite the late hour. Definitely recommended

Had a fabulous night here with a group of 7 , efficient wait staff, nicely laid out table and good presentation. A smallish menu but perfectly adequate with choice, a few blackboard specials as well and a nice wine list. Starters and mains served well and in a timely fashion. Nice service, nice surroundings, would recommend to all. Mains were Pork Belly, Blue Cod, Chicken Breast but nobody chose the Coq a Vin, much to the disapointment of the chef who bought us out a sample at the end of the evening ! Nice touch .

Amazing that this is the first review on TA of this popular Christchurch restaurant and cafe. A cafe/restaurant has been on this site for ten years or more but this iteration, "Rocksalt", has been here for about two years. We have been patrons, usually only for coffee and light food a number of times. Often we have sat outside under the umbrella at the front. There is also a more shaded outside area at the rear of the premises which gives a view only of a carpark. This time we sat inside on a hot, sunny day. Our waitress was quick and attentive. Water and glasses were put on the table as we - a group of four - were being seated along with menus and the drinks list. I'm always impressed by restaurant staff who take food and drinks orders and remember them correctly. A coffee that was ordered was delivered within minutes. A long black at the right temperature, a pleasant flavoursome roast and with a satisfactory crema. Wines, as ordered, were served at the same time. The restaurant was reasonably busy but the meals were delivered with little wait. Homemade bases for the pizza are thin and crunchy. All the dishes were reviewed favourably; properly seasoned, flavoursome and of adequate size. Our meals were all around $18.00 which we thought was the right price and we were happy to pay it. So why not five stars, especially since I have been critical of a couple of other often well reviewed Christchurch restaurants recently? The interior decor of this business is all wood, glass and hard surfaces. There are no furnishings to reduce background noise. I don't go to a restaurant to dance or sing. So why oh why do we have to put up with music being pumped out of speaker systems? It detracts from the enjoyment of conversation with friends which is what the experience is largely about especially when you have to sit right beneath a speaker as we did. If we return it will be back outside or well away from unwanted and unnecessary "music". Worse, it is always someone else's choice of music. Although this is the first TA review, there are reviews in other fora, and I note that this has been a criticism of others.
