Owner description: Banks Peninsula near Christchurch, New Zealand is a must see for its stunning views, beautiful bays and quirky campgrounds. Little River is the gateway to the peninsula. The township has a hotel/pub, 2 cafes, a petrol station, art gallery, craft store and small museum. There are B&Bs, plus the Little River Campground in Okuti Valley Road. They have affordable campervan parks with power, cabins and tentsites set beside a river. The southern bays have some of the best surf, if you know the secret spots as well as good, safe swimming beaches, walking tracks and the Little River Rail Trail. It is a a place that is often over looked as tourists head to Akaroa. If you want to experience more than the usual, to get off the beaten track and really explore, ask at the craft station, which has an info centre.

If you are looking for a day trip or a few days stay not far from Christchurch the Banks Peninsula & Akaroa area is very scenic and interesting with lots of places to explore along the way. Leaving Christchurch I would go via hwy75 stop at Tai Tapu (The Store or shops opposite) pop briefly into Birdlings Beach , Stop Little River nice cafés ,two non touristy NZ arts & craft shops .Carry on to the Hill Top Pub great views across Akaroa harbour. From there simply make your way to Akaroa.
Google Akaroa lots of thing to do in & around the area and other spots to see on the Peninsula itself depending on ones time.

Banks Peninsula is an outdoor enthusiasts dream. Hiking/Tramping, biking, running, walking, kayaking, sailing, climbing, is available just outside your door. Or just sit inside and look at the stunning view with a cup of tea.

visited this area while on a cruise ship. What a lovely town filled with warm and friendly people. the spectacular Bank Peninsula is filled with many photo opportunities but be aware of the winding roads and steep drops - wish I would have been in the area longer :-)

A great road trip make sure you stop at the Hill Top for a drink and to take in the lovely view- fantastic for photography buffs. If you have time stop in at little river and Okains bay (great picnic spot) then on to Akaroa.

On a sunny day the views around the Akaroa harbour are beautiful. The small village of Akaroa is quaint with some interesting art galleries. Visit the old cemetery above the village for some history and view over the harbour. The harbour cruise is lovely and you may see the rare Hector's dolphin, seals and penguins. The small beaches on the north of the peninsular, particularly Le Bons Bay are beautiful and safe swimming beaches. Only 1.5 hours from Christchurch. The Hill top Tavern is a nice place for lunch or morning tea on the way over.
